Q&A with singer-songwriter Delious

Delious (pronounced dee-lee-us) is a successful singer/songwriter who just released his first single as a solo artist. He earned a Grammy, an American Music Award, and various international music awards as a member of popular R&B group All-4-One.

After forming in 1994, the group quickly gained fame with massive radio hits like “So Much In Love,” “I Can Love You Like That,” and “I Swear.” Delious’ latest solo project is called “My Rose,” an upbeat Dance track that is currently climbing up the Billboard Club chart. I recently chatted with Delious via telephone to ask him about the inspiration behind “My Rose” and to talk about his experience with All-4-One.

TBL: Congratulations on your success with “My Rose.” It is a great track.

Delious: Yeah, I’m really excited; especially since this is the first solo project that I’ve done. Being back on the Billboard chart is exciting for me.

Do you remember how you first became involved with All-4-One?

I first met the guys at a Karaoke contest back in 1994. About a month later, I got a voice mail from an A&R guy (talent scout) at a record label asking if I wanted to be in a new group. I thought it was a joke, so when I called the guy back I was actually being difficult. I thought it was a friend of mine making a joke. About five minutes into the conversation, the guy mentioned the karaoke contest and then I said, ‘Oh, is this real?’ He said, ‘Yeah, this is real. I’ve been trying to tell you.’ About a month later “So Much In Love” was Top 5 on the Billboard chart.

Do you have any favorite memories from the early years of All-4-One?

I think my favorite memories from the early years would just be about the traveling and also with the excitement we felt with every song that charted. The fans were great too. But it was all just a big blur.

How so?

I never really lived in the moment because I had always thought it was not real. I remember thinking, ‘This is just too good to be true.’ When “I Swear” came out and reached number one I thought, ‘I have a number one song, no way!’ I was so afraid it was going to end right then and there. The exciting part was [traveling] the world and getting on the stage and getting to sing for people.

And you guys played all over the world.

We played everywhere, man. We went to just about every country.

The group is still together, correct?

Yeah, we have a show coming up in Sacramento.

Cool. I was going to ask next if you guys still perform together, but you just answered that question.

Oh yeah. We released a record in 2009 called No Regrets. That was our last record [to date]. During our down time we do a lot of touring. There was a long period where we didn’t release any records. We just toured. We are probably going to start recording again within the year.

What made you decide to do a solo project?

I had been asked to do a solo project for the longest time but never did. Then I got this track from a friend of mine. I loved it and asked him if I could write some [lyrics] for it. It took me about a year after writing it to get it remixed and released. Then I decided to move forward with it. Luckily, people have responded positively.

I might be wrong about this, but I do not remember there being a lot of Dance remixes for previous All-4-One tracks. Were any made?

“I Can Love You Like That” had a couple of mixes to it. I think Frankie Knuckles came in and did a remix to a song we did called “One Summer Night.” But yeah, there were not a lot; not like Mariah Carey. You know, she was always doing a remix to whatever single she had. We had only a couple.

Did you intend for “My Rose” to be remixed into a Dance track?

I love to dance and I love Dance music. I listen to it all the time. I did not really want to do a ballad because I have been doing those forever. I wanted to do something that was fun that people hopefully would dig and that I would love to perform. I just wanted to do something fun and upbeat. That is the reason I did the Dance version.

Will you be touring as a solo artist as well as with All-4-One?

Possibly. I think I may release another song and see how that goes. If I can get a couple of singles there, I may start hitting some clubs and doing some promotional stuff. I want to see how it goes.

Do you have any plans to do a solo album?

That would be great. I would love to do something like that. I wanted to test the waters first to see what the response would be not just to my song, but to me as a Dance artist. So far it has been really positive. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t thinking about doing a whole record. It is definitely a commitment to do an entire album, so I will put out one more single and see how it does. I want to make sure this wasn’t a fluke (laughing).

What can we expect to see next with All-4-One?

We are going to keep touring. Hopefully with our next record we can get another hit and continue touring. At this point we just want to keep releasing good music. That will enable us to keep working and to continue touring.

How do the other guys in the group feel about your solo work?

They are great about it. We have always been a very close group. If you can believe it, we have never really fought in 18 years or had major disagreements; except about food we ate on tour (laughing).

With support like that, they really are All-4-One (and one-for all). “My Rose” is currently available on iTunes, Amazon, and other online retailers.
