31 years of AIDS: Are we really "Turning the Tide?"

"Turning the Tide" is the theme of the 2012 International AIDS Conference, to be held July 22-27 in Washington, D.C. The conference’s return to U.S. soil after a 22-year absence was made possible by our country being one of the last to end its entry restrictions on people living with HIV, effective January 4, 2010.

Summer worship: Kristine W to perform at Palm Springs benefit

The Desert AIDS Project is holding its 5th annual Mid-Summer Dance Party, “Do Ask, Do Tell” on July 13. This important fundraising event, taking place at the Commune inside the ACE Hotel & Swim Club starting at 8 pm, will feature a live performance from the one and only Kristine W.

With 16 No. 1 Billboard dance hits, Kristine W has spent more time at the top of the dance chart than both Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston. That number will most certainly increase once her new album gets released later this year.

Matt Doyle: Beyond "Private Romeo"

This isn’t your average "Spring Awakening." For those who have witnessed this masterpiece on stage firsthand, would most likely have fallen in love with Matt Doyle. He made a big splash last year in the Alan Brown film, "Private Romeo," starring opposite of Seth Numrich, which was an artful, reimagining of Shakespeare’s "Romeo And Juliet" with a gay twist. And he’s taken Broadway by storm in such hits as "Spring Awakening" and "War Horse." Oh, did we mention he also is a successful singer – now working towards his second CD release?

Rise of the gay superhero

It was in Astonishing X-Men # 5, the moment I realized why I was such a comic book fan. One of the lead X-Men, a beautiful mutant psychic known as Emma Frost was confronting a scientist who was trying to “cure” the mutant gene – and thus render mutants, including the X-Men, as harmless as the next homo sapien. “Nothing but noble intentions, yes.” She tells the scientist. “You’re a veritable Oppenheimer. What’s next? Eliminating the gay gene?” ‘Homosexuality doesn’t represent a threat to human existence,’ the Dr. answers. “We’re clearly watching different televangelists,” Frost quips back.

Craving k.d. lang

It was 1999 and Muriel’s Supper Club had just unveiled their glamorous new hot-spot in Palm Springs, which stood right where Lulu is now. In a savvy move, Muriel’s booked k.d. lang, right out of the gate. Unfortunately, in three clicks of k.d.’s cowboy boots, the tickets were sold out – leaving a town full of fans with a “Constant Craving” that couldn’t be satiated.

The SoCal Rainbow Triangle

It’s pretty clear when it comes to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered folks in our Desert that we are one third of a huge tourism movement of folks among three top LGBT travel destinations in the world – us, West Hollywood and San Diego. The magical rainbow triangle works in several ways.

Wherefore art thou, gay art?

Ever ponder the thought of how to express yourself? Do not, under any circumstances, have a Madge Moment from that question proposed. Truth be told, I am a closeted artist. I paint often and my garage tends to look like Jackson Pollock threw up in it. I struggled for years to come out as a true artist. As children, we instinctually listened to our imagination without limits or boundaries. As adults, we perceive, compute and communicate, and hopefully get the chance to express.

Cowboy up! Palm Springs GSGRA Hot Rodeo is May 5-6

Over Cinco De Mayo weekend things are going to heat up in the valley, and I’m not just talking about the mercury.

The Palm Springs GSGRA Hot Rodeo will be in the valley, or to be more accurate – at the A.C. Dysart Equestrian Center in Banning, on Saturday and Sunday, May 5 & 6, starting at 8 am and 9 am respectively. Besides the rodeo and western dance held on the rodeo grounds; there are a bunch of other fun activities!

Palm Springs AIDS Assistance Program to host "Evening Under The Stars"

It’s everybody’s favorite gala of the year. AIDS Assistance Program’s Evening Under the Stars has served as the the apogee of the charity season in the valley for the 19th year running now. Like the grassroots organization it benefits, EUS, as the locals dub it, is a chance to wrap up high season with the fundraiser that puts the fun back into galas. While it’s a sure bet a few ties will be worn to the event – by the end of the night when The Go Go’s take the stage at the O’Donnell Country club , Saturday, May 5th, those ties will be loosened and dancing shoes will be de rigeur.
