2011: The year of the gay

2011 has been a crazy seesaw year, with terrific highs like "Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell" being repealed, Florida lifting its gay adoption ban, and New York joining six other states in the union to legalize Gay Marriage. Also, another delightful gay character has joined prime time television — we love Happy Ending’s Max!

But there were deep lows, too including the suicides of gay teens Jamie Hubley and Jamey Rodemeyer and the continued rise of hate crimes against gay and transgender people. We polled some of our favorite bold-faced names on how they will remember the past year in queer.

Loose talk: Best quotes from 2011's celebrity interviews

As 2011 fades into a memory and the champagne has been uncorked, welcoming in the new year, we thought it would be a good time to revisit some of the interviews that graced the pages of The BottomLine in the past calendar year and let our interviewees do the talking.

Many thanks to the multitude of celebrities, interviewers and writers who shared their work with us these past 12 months to bring some of the most fascinating people of 2011 to TBL.

VIDEO: A thousands words: An interview with celebrity photographer Blake Little

“A picture is worth a thousand words.”

This old adage is wrongly attributed to many men. Some claim Confucius uttered it first as part of an ancient Chinese proverb. Others give the nod to Russian novelist, Ivan S. Turgenev as the first to coin the term. And often a Google search will ascribe the term to the French dictator Napoleon Bonaparte, who actually said, “Un bon croquis vaut mieux qu’un long discours,” which is more correctly transliterated as, “A good sketch is better than a long speech.”

Celebrity Q&A: Meet Tony Moran

The story behind Tony Moran’s success is an inspiring one. The Grammy-nominated writer, producer, remixer, singer, and DJ has managed to dominate dance floors with his productions for almost three decades. Achieving his first Top 40 Gold record in the 1980’s with Show Me by the Cover Girls, Moran emerged as a leader in the Freestyle music movement. From there Moran continued to build his career by producing music, releasing independent albums, and performing around the world.

Molly Ringwald: Leaving the pink behind

PALM SPRINGS -- It was truly a surreal moment. I was startled awake a few weekends ago by my cell phone ringing. That in and of itself wasn’t too extraordinary. But I have a feature that announces who’s calling and as I stirred from my subconscious slumber my phone announced in its eerie digital voice: Molly Gianopoulos – better known as Molly Ringwald. My eyes flew open and I almost fell out of bed to answer it.

Molly was supposed to call me for our interview the afternoon before but as things can get haywired, there was a miscommunication and she thought it was for Sunday.

The incomparable Dionne Warwick shares stories on her 50 years in show biz

PALM SPRINGS -- There’s a very short list of entertainers who can claim five decades of practicing their craft. And Dionne Warwick is one of them. The New Jersey native has been belting out hits throughout her career, firmly etching an indelible spot in American music.

Throughout the years, Warwick has had 56 singles chart in Billboard’s Hot 100 between 1962 and 1998. Only Aretha Franklin has more female vocalist singles than her.

Funk and Fellini: Meet Keith Strickland of B-52s

PALM SPRINGS -- Let’s try a little word association. When I say the words, the B-52s, what springs to mind? Fun? New Wave? Out-of-bounds parties? Carefree irreverence? “Rock Lobster?”
