Celebrity Interviews

Fashion designer Michael Costello reveals intimate details of his life and his "Project Runway" experience

PALM SPRINGS -- In all likelihood, Michael Costello never saw himself as Celebrity Grand Marshal of the Festival of Lights Parade, but on Saturday, Dec. 4. that’s exactly what the breakout star of this year’s "Project Runway" will be.

And judging from what I saw when I walked down the street with him a few nights ago, the citizens of Palm Springs couldn’t be happier.

An intimate conversation with “Dreamgirl” Jennifer Holliday

Jennifer Holliday started her career almost 30 years ago when she played Effie Melody White in Dreamgirls, although she is best known for her debut single, the Dreamgirls showstopper and Grammy Award-winning R&B/Pop hit, “And I Am Telling You I'm not Going.”

The BottomLine recently caught up with Holliday to learn more about what she’s been up to and how her career has evolved.

The BottomLine: Out of all the songs that you’ve done, what’s your favorite?

The Motels’ Martha Davis has one ass-kicking muse

You can take the “L,” but it’s far from over when it comes to Martha Davis and the Motels.

Davis and the many incarnations of her band, The Motels have been rocking the airwaves since 1975. Always on the cutting edge and never shying from sticking to her guns when it comes to artistic vision, she embodies the New Wave sound that changed rock and roll forever.

The Motels were part of the music video vanguard and for many of us, defined the sound of our generation.

Bullied to death

With the increased number of teens taking their lives due to bullying, educators and community leaders are now working toward a solution.

On Nov. 26, 2004, 15-year-old Josh Melo affixed a rope to a tree outside his home in Ontario, Canada, and hung himself. His friends told investigators that Menlo, gay, had endured incessant bullying at school and had been the target of homophobic slurs and other teasing.

While school officials had admitted to being aware of the allegations of bullying, nothing had been done to ameliorate the situation.

Leslie Jordan: A raconteur for our times

There is a rich tradition of great American humorists that stretch as far back as Samuel Clemens, Will Rogers, Benny Goodman — to the more recent ilk of Mel Brooks, Bob Newhart, Carl Reiner, Bill Cosby, Lily Tomlin and Steve Martin.

The one thing this motley comedy crew have in common is their certain knack for telling a story: poignantly, sometimes provocatively and often with a touch of self-deprecating humor.

And there is one name that should be added to this list posthaste: a handsome, well-dressed diminutive Southern gentleman by the name of Leslie Jordan.

VIDEO: There’s no walking or running away from the problem as governor makes devastating cuts to AIDS programs

PALM SPRINGS -- On Oct. 8, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger used his blue-pencil veto, when signing the 2011 California state budget, to remove $52 million in funding to critical HIV/AIDS prevention programs statewide.

This comes on the heels of the 2010 state budget cutting more than $85 million to those same programs. As the governor slashed the budget for two consecutive years, there are more than 150,000 Californians living with HIV or AIDS – a number that is larger than ever before.

Chatting up Taylor Dayne ahead of Palm Springs gala on Oct. 23

PALM SPRINGS -- It was a bit of a surreal moment the other day, listening to Taylor Dayne politely give directions to a lost tourist at Disneyworld as we were talking over the phone.

The poor lost woman had inadvertently interrupted our interview and without missing a beat, Taylor promptly pointed her in the right direction towards the Epcot Center, where she had just finished her run through in preparation for her performance there later that night.

“Sorry about that, now where were we,” she asked me, multitasking with aplomb.

Back in the Saddle: Downtown Julie Brown is in it for equality

“Hello. This is Julie Brown.”

I had to give my caller ID a quick double take when I heard those words spoken to me. Was this a prank? I mean, I had just sent off the e-mail trying to hammer out a time to speak with MTV legend Downtown Julie Brown about her upcoming gig to host the Palm Springs Equality Awards on Oct. 23.

And then the timbre of her smooth British accent washed over me and I realized, this was indeed the Club MTV VJ herself.

Lunch with Greg Louganis, Olympic superstar turned LGBT activist

Life sometimes offers you an opportunity that you only think you could simply wish for.

As an athlete and former competitor, the thought of driving with my friend, Reidar, to the Malibu beach house of an Olympic Gold medalist was heady stuff. An invitation to lunch with Greg Louganis and his life partner, Daniel McSwiney, added a sense of richness to the adventure.

As we drove down the long, brick-paved driveway I wondered aloud as to what we might encounter. Would I be disappointed? Would this be a tension-filled afternoon? Is Greg as affable as he seems?

One Busy B: "Mad Men’s" Bryan Batt is everything but idle

It would be easy to hate Bryan Batt.

He breathes the same air as Jon Hamm, playing the closeted gay art director Salvatore Romano on "Mad Men." He counts Christina Hendricks and Jane Krakowski from "30 Rock" among his besties. And you wouldn’t know it from "Mad Men", but this Louisiana native has the dreamiest thick Southern accent.

But how could you hate someone who is just so darn nice?
