Queer Puss: The return of Josie Cotton

Josie Cotton crashed onto the world stage in the early eighties with her controversial new wave hit, “Johnny, Are You Queer?”

When the underground dance hit was unexpectedly catapulted on to the airwaves, it sparked a meteoric rise in fame for Cotton that just as quickly went down in flames. Cotton was attacked by the religious right for “Johnny…,” then labeled homophobic by the gay community, and the song was even banned in Amsterdam.

The backlash thwarted her promising career and ultimately made Cotton a pariah in the music business.

Lesbians, your health begins with you

Although lesbians share the same physiological characteristics as our heterosexual counterparts, that’s not to say that our health care needs are one in the same.

Due to ongoing concerns regarding stigmatization during exams, even the most routine of check-ups are often pushed back, oftentimes indefinitely, meaning small issues have a greater propensity for growing into something more serious.

Gay men, your health begins with you

Over the last year we’ve seen and heard a lot about health care, health insurance, health reform and a host of other health related issues.

I’ve written a number of columns and articles regarding this topic; some were my own personal thoughts and some were in direct response to medical, political, pharmaceutical and economic topics that concern us all. Now that the dust has somewhat cleared and we are better able to take a look around, what do we see?

Essentially, one thing remains constant; personal health and fitness is our own best asset as well as our own best insurance.

Delicious dishing with KNEWS radio personalities Bill Feingold and Kevin Holmes

PALM SPRINGS -- Perhaps it was the plush Corinthian leather couch and the huge teak wood desk in the spacious corner office that impressed me most about ‘Bulldog’ Bill Feingold’s crib at KNEWS 94.3 FM.

Oh who am I kidding? This is radio, folks, not MTV! Not that there’s anything wrong with that: but lavish offices are pure imagination in the wonderful aural world of radio.

Into the limelight: Interior designer Dann Foley shines on Showtime

It’s the shorts. It’s gotta be the bicycle shorts Dann Foley is running around in on the episode of Showtime’s "The Real L Word" that made me laugh the hardest and say to the television screen, ‘That’s so Dann!’

But I’m getting ahead of myself here — let me backtrack.

Q&A with Pandora Boxx, the extra "X" is for "X-Factor!"

OK, can you straighten up a question I’ve had for awhile: What’s the proper way to address a drag queen? Do you take offense to being called Pandora when you’re out of drag?

Pandora Boxx: I don’t but there was a time where I used to be, like I really wanted people to call me Michael out of drag. Now I really don’t care as much. I think every drag queen is different so it’s about their personal choice. I’m kind of flexible and easy going.

So what is the genesis for Pandora Boxx — how was she born?

Q&A with Ongina, rhymes with "Mangina"

What’s the biggest misconception people have about drag queens?

Ongina: Um I think that people think that drag queens have to have big hair and they have to have a certain type of aesthetic to them.

Where I think that drag queens can be anything from being, you know, somebody who wants to dress up as kind of the party kid all the way to possibly a glamorous diva. I think that there’s a lot of people when they want to see a drag show, they want to see a full on … you know.

Q&A with Morgan McMichaels, a true West Coast girl

First off, congratulations! You’re definitely a hometown fave since you’re frequently one of the drag divas in Tommi Rose’s “The Playgirls” at Toucans — I know lots of people who were rooting for you on Drag Race this season!

Morgan McMichaels: I’m a Palm Springs girl!

So, how has your life changed since being on RuPaul’s Drag Race?

All hail the dean! RuPaul’s "Drag U" dean of drag Lady Bunny serves it up

Gurl, how does the founder of Wigstock ever find time to do her hair, or anything else for that matter?

Drag-U-Licious! "RuPaul’s Drag U" is in a class of its own

“Deep in the Titty-Caca Valley,” the iconic RuPaul begins, introducing his newest TV show, “a school was formed to help biological women unleash their inner diva, and let the world have it!”

That school is appropriately titled Drag U and it’s poised to be Logo’s hottest hit of the summer. You have to admit there’s a delicious, exquisite irony (along with some inherent gay fun) in the premise of having drag queens teach down on their luck, self-esteem challenged, genuine girls how to get their fab on. And it makes for some addictive reality TV show watching.
