Q-Legal

Can you consolidate or negotiate your way out of debt?

With a bad economy, incomes down, and equity in real estate all but evaporated, millions of people are struggling to pay their debts. More and more homeowners have to choose between paying their mortgages, or making payments on other debts, like credit cards and medical bills.

Same-sex relationships: Pre and post-marital/RDP agreements

Most couples avoid talking about what might happen if the relationship fails. It’s not romantic to discuss a possible break-up, especially when we have waited so long for these official recognitions of our relationships, but it is definitely a prudent step. There are financial obligations and responsibilities that come with marriage, RDP’s, and civil unions, and they need to be discussed and understood as part of the package.

When it comes to wills, do mothers know best?

I recently learned from an acquaintance about a will that is causing disaster in several families. The will had a simple error, and as a result, things are guaranteed to get pretty ugly before they get sorted out. This is a textbook case for why you shouldn’t write your own will.

Q-Legal: How to avoid palimony

Millions of couples in California and around the U.S. live together (cohabit) without benefit of marriage, civil unions or registered domestic partnerships.

Whether lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered or straight, they often share their assets and incomes without any formal or legal arrangements. People enter into these relationships so easily and freely, that they rarely stop to think that such unions can be extremely risky. Let’s look at why, and what you should do about it to protect yourself.

Medical malpractice: A national epidemic

“Be careful about reading health books. You may die of a misprint,” said Mark Twain. He had a keen perception of everyday life, which he observed with great humor. And most of his observations were right on the money. What would really happen if a misprint in a medical book or health magazine caused injury or death? Most likely, there would be a lawsuit by the injured person, or their family. Most of us believe, deep in our souls, that someone should pay for mistakes when it comes to our health and well-being.

Same-sex marriage: The beat goes on

Over the past few years, this column has closely followed the ups and downs of same-sex marriage issues. Here are the latest milestones in our long march to equality:

Protecting our furry and feathered friends

According to the Humane Society of the United States, 39% of U.S. households have at least one dog and 33% have at least one cat.

Together we own more than 77 million dogs and 93 million cats! Then there are the 12 million birds and 7 million horses, together with our tropical fish, ferrets, hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, lizards, snakes, turtles…you get the picture. We really love our pets.

Q-Legal: Tips on underwater mortgages, civil unions and long-term medical care

Many homeowners are still struggling with mortgage payments that have ballooned as their take-home pay has dropped. Property values have (hopefully) hit the floor.
