Q-Legal: Domestic Partnerships, Like Marriages, Require Commitment

Most couples focus on the important rights they receive when they register as Domestic Partners, such as the right to share state tax benefits and some pension benefits; the right to make legal and medical decisions for a partner; and the right to inherit property as a spouse are a few of the many advantages of registering as domestic partners. Although the federal government doesn’t recognize these relationships, the advantages to couples in California and other states that do honor them are many.

Q-Legal: Are Domestic Partnerships As Good As Marriage?

LGBT relationships have been much in the news since California first passed a Domestic Partner Registration law, which took effect on January 1, 2000. Registered partners’ rights and responsibilities were greatly expanded with passage of California’s Domestic Partner Rights and Responsibilities Act of 2003, which took effect in January 2005. And each year since then, state legislators have passed new laws to strengthen the legal support for registered domestic partners.
