SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego LGBT Community Center says it is the time of year again when the flowers bloom, the weather warms and community members start planning to lace up their walking (or running) shoes in preparation for AIDS Walk & Run San Diego.

The 22nd annual event, which will take place on Sunday, Sept. 25, at 8 am in Balboa Park, is designed to increase awareness about the ongoing HIV/AIDS epidemic while raising vital funds for the agencies and programs that serve thousands of San Diegans living with HIV.

AIDS Walk & Run San Diego is the region's largest one-day HIV/AIDS fundraiser.

The charity event began in 1987 as the Walk for Life and has since become a San Diego community tradition. The event allows corporate partners, foundations, businesses, families, individuals, healthcare partners and all local HIV/AIDS service providers to work together as a community to ensure funding for services needed by the men, women, children and families living with HIV/AIDS.

More than 8,000 people take part in the event, including walkers and runners, volunteers and donors.

In addition to funding a portion of the HIV/AIDS programs provided by The Center, the San Diego HIV Funding Collaborative grants AIDS Walk & Run dollars to other local HIV/AIDS service organizations.

Last year, AIDS Walk distributed $550,000 to 14 community-based HIV/AIDS service organizations across San Diego County.

The Center has opened registration for AIDS Walk & Run on the event's redesigned and simplified website. Participants and teams are encouraged to register early to maximize the amount of time they have to fundraise.

AIDS Walk & Run San Diego also has a page on Facebook.
