SAN DIEGO -- Stepping Stone San Diego's third annual Mission Bay Cruise will now include a little extra flair, as gay jokesmith Bruce Vilanch, known for his eclectic eyewear and collection of unique T-shirts, will join the fundraiser.
The six-time Emmy Award winning comedy writer, songwriter and actor will lend his talent to the fundraiser, which will be held Sunday, Oct. 2, from 4-8 pm aboard the William D. Evans sternwheeler boat.
Vilanch, whose large build and long hair have become remarkably recognizable, has a diverse background in entertainment, dating to his childhood.
Beginning as a child model for Lane Bryant, Vilanch later found himself writing for the Chicago Tribune when acting didn't seem to be in his cards. The legendary Bette Midler was impressed by a review of her cabaret performance he wrote and hired him to add some "punch" to her act.
Later moving to Los Angeles, Vilanch wrote for a number of a variety shows, and created material for several Hollywood comedians. After appearing in a 1999 feature-length documentary titled "Get Bruce!" and a stint on "Hollywood Squares," Vilanch became a household name.
After writing and starring in his off-Broadway one-man show in 2000, "Bruce Vilanch: Almost Famous," Vilanch has been the head writer for the Oscars and also provides material for the Tonys, Grammys and Emmys.
Vilanch enjoys participating at numerous charity functions, especially those dealing with LGBT causes, and says that he is looking forward to supporting Stepping Stone's life-saving work with LGBT individuals in recovery.
“The board of directors of Stepping Stone is thrilled that Mr. Vilanch has agreed to join us on our third Mission Bay Cruise," said Tom Reise, board chair. "After writing for the Oscars, Grammys, Emmys and Tonys for years, he has proven to be one of the funniest people in Hollywood. Come enjoy a memorable evening and help us celebrate Stepping Stone’s 35th anniversary."
The event will include a gourmet dinner, silent auction, entertainment and a comedy show by Vilanch, who will also host a live auction and VIP meet and greet onboard.
Regular boarding passes are $75 and VIP passes are $125, with all proceeds benefiting Stepping Stone.
