TONIGHT: Young professionals invited to mixer to learn about community service opportunities

SAN DIEGO -- Future Leaders of Our Community (FLOC) San Diego chapter will host its first awareness event of the year tonight, giving guests the opportunity to learn about volunteer opportunities with the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).

Those who attend the 6:30 pm event, which will be held at Bamboo Lounge in Hillcrest, will have the opportunity to meet and network with other like-minded individuals who are looking to volunteer and get involved with a worthy cause.

FLOC is an open, membership-driven organization that brings awareness, inspiration and participation opportunities to young professionals in the community. The organization has five chapters in cities in California and Washington, with the San Diego group being formed last October.

Each month, interested participants are invited to a mixer where they learn more about upcoming community service opportunities with a charity that is selected by chapter leaders. Past projects that the San Diego group has participated in include helping build homes in Tijuana and teaching inner-city youth how to surf.

Participants at the mixer will learn about the group's next service project, which will be held on Thursday, Feb. 9 at Petco Park. Volunteers will help with event set-up, live and silent auctions, and event tear down for MDA's Muscle Team Gala, a benefit dinner. Volunteer shifts will be available throughout the day from noon to 11 pm.

Happy hour specials, including half off bottles of wine and two for one sushi rolls will be available at tonight's mixer. Admission is free, however a $5-10 donation is suggested.

Bamboo Lounge is located at 1475 University Ave. in Hillcrest.
