Local activists reflect on meaning of today's San Diego Veteran's Parade

SAN DIEGO -- San Diego has always been a Navy town and as such, it has become home to many sailors and Marines who have settled here, long after their military careers end.

It also boasts a large number of LGBT military activists.

These activists have all worked hard over the years, to not only make life easier for their fellow LGBT veterans, but to help boost their morale, their pride and to fight for their right to serve openly and be recognized as any other veteran is.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN) has decided to make a move on the eve of Veteran's Day to request that the Veteran's Administration makes some necessary changes to improve the assistance, support and benefits for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender veterans.

In a letter to Secretary Eric Shinseki, Army Veteran and SLDN Executive Director Aubrey Sarvis outlined concerns that the VA isn't prepared for the increasing number of openly LGBT veterans now seeking assistance in the wake of the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”

Post DADT: Proud gay sailor takes his partner to a Navy Ball

We often hear memorable references, today, to incredible and powerful moments from the past on the fight for civil rights.

Active duty officer at helm of OutServe magazine reveals his identity at long last

WASHINGTON — Finding out that 1st Lt. Josh Seefried is gay won’t be a shock to most of his co-workers at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in New Jersey. He has already come out to some of them, and dropped not-so-subtle hints for others.

But now that the "Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell" law barring openly gay troops from serving in the military has been repealed, even some close friends who know Seefried’s personal life will be stunned to find out that he has an even bigger secret.

SLDN reminds service members of the "dos and don'ts" of celebrating DADT repeal

Starting tonight, military service members past and present across the country will be celebrating the end of the decades-long ban of gays and lesbians openly serving in the U.S. military.

The new law takes effect Tuesday, at 00:01 a.m., September 20, 2011.

Although all are encouraged to participate in the celebrations, SLDN just wants to remind active duty members of what they need to take into consideration as they understandably get caught up in the revelry of the many different types of gatherings that will take place in the wake of this historic repeal.
