Pentagon orders halt to DADT discharges after court order

DADT discharges continue despite repeal that's underway

WASHINGTON – The Pentagon has announced that three more servicemembers have been discharged under the military’s outgoing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy that discriminates against LGBT troops.

DADT is still in effect until 60 days after the repeal process is officially certified. Outgoing Defense Secretary Robert Gates predicted recently that certification won’t be done until late July or early August, so LGBT troops should continue to exercise the utmost caution.

The latest DADT discharges did not sit well with advocacy groups.

WASHINGTON -- Defense Secretary Robert Gates told Agence France-Presse (AFP) in an interview Thursday, June 23, that the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” (DADT) repeal would not be certified before he retires June 30.

Gates said he expected his successor, Leon Panetta, to approve the certification in late July or early August. The DADT repeal would then take place 60 days after the certification is made.

The latest news on the DADT repeal disappointed Aubrey Sarvis, executive director of the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN).

No DADT amendments in Senate panel’s markup of Defense Authorization Bill

SLDN pushes back on Rep. Hunter’s DADT letter to President Obama

WASHINGTON -- Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN) didn’t waste any time on Thursday reacting to Rep. Duncan Hunter’s (R-CA) letter requesting the Obama administration to delay certification of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” (DADT) repeal.

Army veteran Aubrey Sarvis, executive director, pointedly noted that the letter was signed by only 23 members of Congress. There are 535 voting members of Congress, comprising the House of Representatives and the Senate.
