Young filmmaker takes on "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"

Perhaps Naomi Davis is not the most likely person to be making a film about the U.S. military’s “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” (DADT) policy, but as someone who was denied entrance to the Air Force in the early 1980’s because I answered “yes” to the homosexual tendencies question, I’m glad she is.

I’m also glad you’re reading this, because Naomi needs our support! I learned of Naomi, a senior in Film/TV at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts when she introduced herself to me via email as part of her efforts to increase awareness about, and raise funds for her thesis film.

“Out of Annapolis” documentary shares stories of gay alumni of the Naval Academy

“Out of Annapolis” is a timely documentary, especially with the ongoing dilemma that surrounds the proposal to repeal the policy that has become known as “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” which prohibits openly gay service members to serve in the military.

The film is produced by retired Cmdr. Steve Clark Hall. He graduated from the Naval Academy in 1975, and served in the Navy for 20 years. The attack submarines Greenling and Drum were under his command at some point during his career.

VIDEO: Vice President Joe Biden “hopes” to see end of DADT next month

Vice President Joe Biden tells Larry King that the White House is working with members of Congress to try to repeal the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy.

Biden says the issue is “complicated for people to understand,” and disputes those who contend that President Barack Obama could simply sign away the policy. He says the Justice Department must defend the policy because it remains the law of the land.

He also says he “hopes” to see the end of DADT by the end of the year.

VIDEO: Photos of gay troops make statement about discriminatory DADT policy

A soldier and his shadow sit alone on wrinkled sheets. With his knees pressed tightly up against his chest, he wraps his arms around his legs and bows his head.

In another photo, a soldier stands before a mirror. His raised hand covers just enough of his reflection to protect his anonymity.

But it's not photographer Jeff Sheng from whom these men are hiding their identities.

It's the military.

Open letter to the community: Ending "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" is a matter of honor

When I take on a job, I finish it.

After Sept. 11, I volunteered to fight for my country. I became a Captain in the U.S. Army and was awarded a Bronze Star while serving in Iraq. While in Baghdad, I counseled many active-duty servicemembers who came to me with tortured souls, concerned that their sexual orientation might end their military careers, as a result of the military's discriminatory "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy.

Servicemembers Legal Defense Network launches Veterans Day VIDEO tribute

WASHINGTON – Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN) launched its Veterans Day Video Tribute to recognize and honor all veterans – past and present, LGBT and straight – for their service in our nation’s armed forces.

“This Veterans Day we salute all men and women in uniform who have risked their lives at home and abroad to keep America safe and free,” said retired Navy Commander Zoe Dunning.

Open letter to the community: Fight back now on DADT!

Right now critical discussions are underway among Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Sen. Carl Levin and Ranking Member Sen. John McCain and other senators about voting on the defense budget during the Senate's lame-duck session, which allows for "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" (DADT) repeal.

The stakes for repeal happening this year couldn't be higher.

Sen. McCain wants repeal language stripped out of the defense bill so he is not forced to take an on-the-record vote against funding the troops, and he wants the Democrats to give in to his outrageous demands.

Open letter to the community: The country is organizing next week -- are you?

Friends,

It's only been three days since Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid narrowly held on to his seat, and he's already starting to falter in his commitment to repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" this year. While the advocacy community knows that he must bring up the National Defense Authorization Act (containing repeal of DADT) before the Thanksgiving recess this month, it appears that Senator Reid is backpedaling from that commitment.

Attention: Service members still at risk under DADT

The bottom line is that Monday's ruling by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals means "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" (DADT) is still in effect and service members should NOT come out.

This "stay pending appeal" follows the Ninth Circuit's "administrative stay" of the injunction issued last month by U.S. District Court Judge Virginia Phillips, which barred enforcement of DADT.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR with VIDEOS: I am gay and I want to serve my country!

My name is Omar Lopez. I am a proud Navy sailor who was discharged under "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" after honorably serving our country for five years.

When I heard the news last week that a federal judge in California ruled that policy unconstitutional and that there was a worldwide injunction stopping enforcement of the policy, I was thrilled -- there's nothing I would love more than to re-join the Navy. With the help of GetEQUAL and a Texas-based GetEQUAL organizer, I went to my local recruitment office to see if I could re-enlist.
