Joe Biden: Transgender discrimination is "the civil rights issue of our time"

WASHINGTON -- Vice President Joe Biden said transgender discrimination is "the civil rights issue of our time" during a visit to a Florida field office on Tuesday, according to pool reports.

Biden was meeting with volunteers at an Obama for America office in Sarasota, Fla., when he singled out one woman "who he thought had beautiful eyes," reads the pool report. The woman said something to Biden that was inaudible to the pool reporter, but Biden responded to her by saying it was the "civil rights issue of our time."

Deployed soldier begins sex change

She’s a lesbian, and almost everyone in her unit knows it.

She wears her hair cropped short and has a distinctly boyish appearance.

And she’s becoming manlier by the day, now that she’s started taking male hormones.

Call her Keith. That’s the name this 26-year-old specialist, now deployed to Afghanistan, plans to take when she completes a transition begun several months ago when she started giving herself testosterone injections every other week, under the direction of a civilian doctor who specializes in gender changes.

The number of LGBT delegates is historical and record-breaking: 486 in total from every state in the country and a dramatic upswing from the 288 on board for the DNC in ’08.

Transgender Pakistanis are in a category of their own

PAKISTAN -- Urban Pakistan assaults your senses: tangles of traffic; Pakistani pop competing with the mosque's call to prayer; pungent spices in the steamy air. And then there are the transvestites.

At traffic lights, you see people draped in elegant pink and red clothing, with sparkling makeup. They tap their painted fingernails on your car window, asking for money. And that's when you notice the stubble on their chins.

"Begging here in traffic is just a part-time job," says 32-year-old Mina Mehvish. "I really want to be a dancer."

NCLR hires Geoff Kors as senior legislative and policy strategist

SAN FRANCISCO -- The National Center for Lesbian Rights has hired Geoff Kors, a long-time leader in the LGBT movement, as senior legislative and policy strategist.

Kors starts today and will work with NCLR state legislative director Connie Utada and NCLR policy director Maya Rupert to strengthen and expand the organization's advocacy on national, state, and local legislative and policy initiatives.

Transgender Americans: Are your voting rights in jeopardy?

New voter ID laws could prevent more than 25,000 transgender citizens from voting, according to the Williams Institute at UCLA. The National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE) has released “Voting While Trans” resources in order to educate trans voters on what they can do to successfully cast their ballots, particularly during what advocate Laverne Cox says is “a critical election season.”
