Iran accused of rampant discrimination and violence against sexual minorities

AMSTERDAM -- Discriminatory laws and policies against homosexuals and other sexual minorities in Iran put them at risk of harassment, violence, and even death, Human Rights Watch said in a report released today.

Iran's sexual minorities, especially those who identify themselves as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT), are victimized both by state and private actors in part because those actors know they can get away with it.

One Iranian trans woman refugee doesn't survive "a lifetime of cruelty and rejection"

A simple stone marker recessed into the lawn at Scarborough's Bethel Pioneer Memorial Cemetery is the sole, drab reminder of a handsome 28-year-old Iranian man who was only just starting to transform into a woman when she died.

Atrian escaped a brutal life with an abusive father in Iran, then suffered cruel taunts in another Muslim country when she sought asylum in Turkey.

But it was in Toronto that she became unraveled, overwhelmed and unable to find peace. On July 22, 2008, the coroner was called to her small downtown apartment.

In Egypt, lesbians “pass” as heterosexual

CAIRO, Egypt -- The last 30 years of Egypt’s history have told a tale of regression, oppression and the slow erosion of democratic institutions. The Egyptian state, under the leadership of Hosni Mubarak, has been in a state of emergency for almost the entire duration of his presidency. Human rights have been shifted to a back burner in this military regime, with tyranny, harassment, and torture being the order of the day. The Queen Boat Trial of 2001 was a very clear and pronounced display of the Egyptian state’s homophobia.

DENVER -- When Alexandra Reyes' father caught her wearing her sister's shoes and clothes, he tied her up and beat her with spiked pieces of a tree.

Reyes, 32, was born a boy named Carlos but began living life as a girl at age 8, infuriating her traditional Mayan family in Cenotillo, Mexico. One night, an aunt walked into Reyes' bedroom and tried to kill her with a machete because she didn't want Reyes in the family.
