Grand jury charges four Texas teens with felony graffiti in anti-gay crime spree

FORT WORTH, Texas — A grand jury on Monday indicted four teens who stand accused of writing anti-gay slurs and other vulgar messages on vehicles and homes in an Arlington, Texas neighborhood earlier this year.

Tarrant County grand jurors returned the indictments of felonious graffiti causing $1,500 to $20,000 in damages against John Austin Cartwright, 17, Seth Stephen Hatcher, 18, and Morgen Rae Aubuchon, 18, all of Arlington. Daniel Damian Sibley, 18, of Fort Worth, was also indicted.

Babycakes to sell "A Cupcake to Remember" to raise money for San Diego Remembers

SAN DIEGO -- Those with a sweet tooth can do their part to stand up against hate by purchasing the special "A Cupcake To Remember" between now and Oct. 14 at Babycakes.

San Diego Remembers, a local community organization that coordinates a number of anti-hate education activities, has partnered with the cupcake bar to sell the sweet treat as a fundraiser for their programs, including the upcoming fifth annual San Diego Remembers Matthew Shepard March, taking place on Tuesday, Oct. 9.

17-year-old certified as adult, charged with hate crime against gay Cape Girardeau woman

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. -- The 17-year-old suspect in the July 24 beating of a Cape Girardeau woman will be prosecuted as an adult, a judge ruled Tuesday, and officials wasted no time filing charges that included "hate crime" language because the victim is gay.

In a hearing that lasted less than 10 minutes, Judge Scott Lipke transferred the suspect, Mercedes M. Ayers, from the juvenile system to the adult courts. Ayers, already in ankle shackles, was then taken into custody and transferred to the Cape Girardeau County Jail.

Gay athletic director at prep school targeted in hate crimes

PISMO BEACH, Calif. -- The gay athletic director of Mission College Preparatory Catholic High School was targeted with two vandalism incidents that police in two local cities investigated as hate crimes.

On the morning of April 26, Mission Prep athletic director Bailey Brown went outside her home in Pismo Beach to discover her car spray-painted, her tires slashed and the vehicle’s body scratched throughout, according to Pismo Beach Police Department Lt. Steve Weir.

Lesbian pastor's celebration ends with possible hate crime

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- It was a meant to be a day of celebration.

An openly gay, Evangelical Lutheran pastor from St. Paul has been appointed to a prominent leadership role -- to fight discrimination.

But the ceremony on Saturday ended with police investigating a possible hate crime in the parking lot outside the church where it was held.

Three children accused of attacking lesbian couple in alleged hate crime

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. — A lesbian couple in southeastern Missouri are recovering from an alleged attack by three neighborhood youths in what the couple claims is hate crime motivated by the sibling’s discrimination of their sexual orientation.

Jeana Terry and Lisa Lange of Cape Girardeau, Mo., said they were attacked on July 24, by three children who live in a house down the street from them, reported the Southeastern Missourian.

LINCOLN, Neb. — In her first appearance since suffering an alleged attack in a home invasion last week that police officials are investigating as a possible hate crime, Charlie Rogers of Lincoln, Neb., said, “I’m not hiding from this anymore.”

Rogers, 33, said three masked attackers invaded her home, painted homophobic slurs on the walls, and carved them into her skin, before attempting to set her house on fire.

Planning begins for 5th annual San Diego Remembers Matthew Shepard event

SAN DIEGO -- San Diego Remembers is gearing up to plan its fifth annual remembrance of Matthew Shepard, the young gay man who was killed in 1998 because he was gay.

The group began organizing the yearly march and vigil in 2008 to mark the 10th anniversary of Shepard's death out of concern that the horrendous crime was slipping from the public's memory. Organizers hope that by remembering Shepard and others who have been victim of hate violence, community members will be inspired to get involved with organizations and initiatives to stand up against hate.

500 gather for vigil for lesbian brutalized in home invasion

LINCOLN, Neb. — Over 500 people gathered on the steps of the Nebraska State Capitol Sunday night to hold a vigil for a lesbian woman brutalized early Sunday morning in what local LGBT activists are calling a hate crime.

According to Lincoln, Neb., Police Captain Joe Wright, patrol officers responded to an address two blocks south of Lincoln High School in the downtown area, for a reported assault and house fire.
