VIDEO: Teen lesbian brutally beaten by men yelling anti-gay slurs

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- A Louisville, Kentucky teen is recovering at home after being injured in an attack by a group of adults.

Her family believes she's a victim of a hate crime.

The girl, who suffered several injuries including a broken jaw, was with two younger boys when the attack happened.

They said the adults yelled anti-gay slurs at the girl before she was beaten.

"Her jaw is broken in several places and she has to have a plate put in her jaw," said family friend Brenda Hickerson. "She has teeth knocked out of her mouth and she has scrapes and bruises."

San Diego Remembers to host vigil in response to Texas shooting of young lesbian couple

SAN DIEGO -- In response to the shooting of two young lesbians in Portland, Texas last weekend, San Diego Remembers will host a brief vigil at the site of the John Wear Hate Crimes Memorial Plaque in Hillcrest on Tuesday, July 3, at 8 pm.

Mollie Judith Olgin, 19, and Mary Kristene Chapa, 18 were found Saturday in a nature area knee-deep in grass, and are believed to have been shot nine hours earlier. The shooting claimed the life of Olgin, and Chapa remains in serious but stable condition following emergency surgery.

5 arrested in Texas anti-gay vandalism, may face hate crime charges

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Police in Arlington, Texas, have arrested five suspects in a crime spree that included anti-gay vandalism at a lesbian couple's home.

Police are recommending that the District Attorney prosecute the five suspects under the state's hate crimes law based on sexual orientation.

Chilean leaders call for hate crimes law after brutal attack on gay man

SANTIAGO, Chile — A brutal attack on a gay Chilean man over the past weekend has drawn sharp criticism over the lack of LGBT-inclusive hate crime laws in the South American country.

Doctors in Santiago said 24-year-old Daniel Zamudio had been put in a medically induced coma while being treated for severe head trauma and a broken right leg suffered in the attack on Saturday by unidentified assailants.

Zamudio also had swastika-like shapes drawn on his chest, fueling speculation that neo-Nazis were involved.

I recently attended the standing-room-only funeral for Deoni Jones. She was 23 years old, fatally stabbed while waiting at a bus stop in Washington, D.C. Police say they have no evidence that this particular stabbing was related to her gender identity. Regardless, she was one of too many transgender women violently killed.

PFLAG San Diego to discuss cyber bullying at meeting Monday

SAN DIEGO -- PFLAG San Diego will include a special presentation on cyber bullying at its monthly meeting at 7 pm Monday, Feb. 27.

Parents, Friends and Families of Lesbians and Gay (PFLAG) is a support, education, and advocacy organization with chapters throughout the world. The San Diego chapter is an all volunteer group made up of parents, family and friends of LGBT people.

It Gets Better Project special to air tonight on MTV and Logo networks

The "It Gets Better Project" is coming to a television near you, tonight, Tuesday, February 21, 2012 at 8 pm (PST).

Dan Savage started the "It Gets Better Project" in September of 2010, after a rash of LGBT teen suicides due to bullying began to rock the nation.

He and his partner, Terry Miller, created a single video that quickly grew to over 40,000 videos. The videos have been uploaded from all over the world, and have received over 50 million views overall.

San Diego Remembers to commemorate 20 years since anti-gay murder of John Wear

SAN DIEGO -- To commemorate the 20 years that have passed since a local teenager was killed in Hillcrest because he was perceived to be gay, a local organization will host a small ceremony called "San Diego Remembers John Wear" on Tuesday, Dec. 13.

Reports say that the 17-year-old Wear was walking down Essex Street in Hillcrest with a groups of friends on the evening of Dec. 13, 1991, when they became victims of a hate-motivated attack.

In Scotland, police appeal for help after homophobic attack in Edinburgh

EDINBURGH, Scotland -- Scottish police are appealing for witnesses after a gay man’s jaw was broken in Edinburgh city center over the weekend.

The attack happened in the early hours of Sunday morning on Waverley Bridge. The 24-year-old victim was walking with friends in the area just after midnight.

They were confronted by three men who began shouting homophobic comments.

The attack echoes a similar incident in September, when a 20-year-old man’s jaw was also broken.
