AMERICAN CANYON, Calif. -- A Fresno teenager was arrested Saturday on suspicion of committing a hate crime against a gay couple, American Canyon police officials said.

The 15-year-old boy was booked into Napa County Juvenile Hall just before 8 pm for making criminal threats to the couple in front of the American Canyon Safeway store, apparently based on their sexual orientation, police said.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Police are investigating a suspected hate crime after a group of men beat two gay Fort Carson soldiers and others while shouting anti-homosexual and racial slurs.

The victims told KRDO-TV they believe they were targeted at a fast food restaurant early Saturday because they're gay.

Two victims are Fort Carson soldiers, who asked to remain anonymous because being identified as homosexual could harm their military careers.

"I'm a tanker,” said a gay soldier identified as John.

COVINGTON, Ky. -- A Kentucky judge on Tuesday labeled the attack of two lesbian women and two men who came to their aid as a hate crime during the sentencing of a suspect. Devlin Burke, 31, will spend 17 years in prison the attack last August.

It began as Burke yelled anti-gay slurs at the women as they came out of a Covington club. The confrontation got physical and the women and the two men who came to their rescue were all hurt.

By labeling Burke's conviction as a hate crime, the parole board can now order him to serve his entire sentence with no early release.

NEW YORK – Navi Pillay, the United Nations high commissioner for human rights, issued a video statement this week that condemns hate crimes against lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender people.

Equal rights for all is "a great human rights cause and one I am proud to support," she says in the video.

Pillay specifically cited horrific anti-gay incidents in New York City, South Africa, Brazil and Hondorus.
