Latino transgender pageant in the OC spotlights the beauty of HIV education and prevention

SANTA ANA, Calif. -- The Gay & Lesbian Community Services Center of Orange County (The Center OC) will host the 19th annual Hermosa y Protegida HIV Prevention Pageant on Saturday, April 28, at the Pearson Park Amphitheatre in Anaheim.

The event regularly draws a crowd of around 500.

Special Delivery San Diego celebrates 21 years

SAN DIEGO -- Serving more than 100 free, healthy meals daily to low-income individuals living with HIV, AIDS and other medical conditions, the nonprofit Special Delivery San Diego can trace its origins back 21 years to the humanitarian effort of one Uptown restaurant owner.

HRC releases brief on HIV/AIDS and the LGBT community

WASHINGTON - The Human Rights Campaign today released an issue brief framing many of the issues set to be discussed at today’s White House LGBT Conference on HIV/AIDS in Atlanta, Ga.

Dr. Grant Colfax, director of the White House Office of National AIDS Policy, and Dr. Kevin Fenton of the Centers for Disease Control will deliver remarks at this conference. It is the fourth in a series of such conferences hosted by the White House.

Janssen Therapeutics awards its first Point Scholarship for LGBT students

TITUSVILLE, N.J. -- Janssen Therapeutics, a division of Janssen Products, is supporting education for LGBT students through the creation of a Point Scholarship.

Point Foundation (Point) is the nation's largest scholarship-granting organization for LGBT students of merit. Janssen Therapeutics is the first pharmaceutical company to fund a Point Scholarship.

Mama's Day fundraiser is set for May 11 in La Jolla

SAN DIEGO – Attendees planning on coming to the 21st annual Mama’s Day fundraiser will not be disappointed with the lineup planned for the event at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla on Friday, May 11, from 5:30 to 9:30 pm.

More than 700 guests are expected to attend an extraordinary evening to benefit Mama’s Kitchen, a nonprofit organization to cook and deliver hot, nutrition-specific meals free of charge to men, women and children affected by AIDS or cancer throughout San Diego County.

HUD awards $33 million to 18 HIV/AIDS housing programs

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development today announced that more than 1,200 extremely low-income persons living with HIV/AIDS will continue to receive permanent housing as a result of nearly $33 million in grants HUD is awarding.

Four California program earned grants: $1.5 million to the City of Los Angeles Housing Department, $1.5 million to the County of Alameda Housing and Community Development Department, $1.3 million to the Tenderloin AIDS Resource Center in San Francisco, and $1 million to the Salvation Army Alegria in Long Beach.

UN official: Protection of human rights essential in fight against HIV/AIDS

NEW YORK -- A top United Nations official today stressed the importance of protecting the rights of individuals with HIV/AIDS, as well as of populations who are more vulnerable to the epidemic.

During the first UN Human Rights Council panel on HIV, High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay underlined that although there has been much progress since HIV was first discovered 31 years ago, there is still much to be done to ensure that no human rights violations are committed which make individuals more vulnerable to the disease.
