Only 28% of Americans with HIV are getting optimal care

Only slightly more than one-quarter of Americans infected with the AIDS virus are getting the form of medical care that maximizes their life expectancy, according to a new estimate.

The goal of AIDS treatment is to suppress growth of HIV until the virus is no longer detectable in the bloodstream. Only 28% of the 1.2 million people living with HIV in the United States have their “viral load” controlled to that optimal degree, epidemiologists at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Tuesday.

Grim news from the UK: HIV infection rate hits record high

LONDON -- The number of people living with HIV in the UK reached an estimated 91,500 in 2010, with a quarter of those unaware of their infection, according to Health Protection Agency figures published today.

The data, released by the HPA ahead of World AIDS Day on Thursday, also shows the highest ever rate of new infections.

More than 3,000 gay men were diagnosed with HIV last year, as part of 6,660 new infections in the population as a whole.

The 2010 figures mean 100,000 people may be living with the virus in the UK by the end of this year.

The largest ever international study of the sexual health of men who have sex with men (MSM), which recruited men from across the European continent, has found clear links between the social environment men live in and their own internal acceptance of their sexuality.
