VIDEO: Twenty-something single mom is an unlikely HIV activist

Three years ago, Janine Brignola was 25 and three months pregnant. She had not been promiscuous and so was completely unprepared for the abrupt and blunt telephone call from a nurse who informed her that her prenatal exam results stated she was HIV-positive.

She did not fit the stereotypes then of a person living with HIV, nor does she fit the stereotypes now of media activist, but both she is. Soft-spoken – like anyone’s favorite sister, daughter, or best girlfriend – Janine is not who you’d expect to find on YouTube with the moniker “HIVChick.”
