13th annual National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

Today marks the 13th observance of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NBHAAD).

Christie's Place in San Diego gets grant from AIDS United

WASHINGTON -- Christie's Place of San Diego is among the winners of AIDS United grants to help HIV-positive people stay in care.

Thanks to a $4 million investment by the MAC AIDS Fund and a unique partnership with AIDS United, $1 million in initial grants have been awarded to seven organizations across the U.S. to help define and expand programs that help keep HIV-positive people in care and on treatment.

Study shows UK gay men's HIV infection rate soars despite testing

Efforts to reduce HIV transmission among UK gay and bisexual men over the past decade have failed, according to a new study.

The research published in today’s Lancet (Feb .1) shows that infection rates have remained stable despite increased testing and treatment.

While there has been a four-fold increase in testing rate and an advance in treatment uptake from 69 to 80 percent, new infections in England and Wales have flat-lined at 2,300 to 2,500 a year.

In Michigan, effort to enforce HIV "health threat" law raises questions

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Michigan health officials are using HIV surveillance technologies to assist in enforcing a "health threat" law that makes it illegal for HIV-positive people to have sex without disclosing their status.

A new University of Michigan study reveals that health officials employ the state's names reporting database, alongside partner services referrals, for law enforcement purposes. However, this is bad social policy for a variety of reasons, said Trevor Hoppe, the study's author and a doctoral candidate in sociology and women's studies.

GLBT Historic Task Force leads campaign for local AIDS memorial

SAN DIEGO -- After leading last year’s successful “Harvey Milk Street” campaign, the San Diego GLBT Historic Task Force will now focus on creating a San Diego AIDS memorial, in part to honor over 7,600 AIDS-related deaths in San Diego County.

Annual Truax Awards ceremony honors individuals, groups working in HIV/AIDS services

Teresa Oyos won this year’s top honors at the Dr. A. Brad Truax Award ceremony held on World AIDS Day, Dec. 1. The annual reception honors local individuals and organizations working to improve the lives of those affected by HIV and AIDS.

Currently a senior staff member in the University of California, San Diego HIV Neurobehavioral Research Program (HNRP), Oyos has been working in HIV and AIDS service organizations for over 24 years.
