ACTION ALERT: Help Being Alive San Diego win Chase grant

SAN DIEGO -- Being Alive HIV/AIDS Services has a chance to win a grant from Chase Community Giving Fund.

Supporters of Being Alive San Diego are urged to go online and vote.

“The deadline is Sept 19 so please take a moment to vote,” said Shannon Wagner, executive director.

Supporters can go online HERE and look for the vote button and then do a search for Being Alive. It takes about 30 seconds to vote and if you share the giving fund you can receive an extra vote.

AIDS Assistance Program gets $100,000 grant

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. -- AIDS Assistance Program (AAP) has received a matching $100,000 grant from Wells Fargo Foundation in support of its annual “Angel Program” fundraising drive.

Tim Hanlon, President of Wells Fargo Foundation, gave the good news to AAP CEO Mark Anton, who says the funds will be used to support the organization’s food voucher program, which helps feed more than 500 people per month.

Diving for Being Alive pool party benefit slated for Sunday

SAN DIEGO -- A pool party will be held this Sunday, Sept. 2, to benefit Being Alive, San Diego's oldest HIV/AIDS service provider.

The event, called "Diving for Being Alive," will take place from 12-4 pm at the Hillcrest estate of Mike and Billy Weiss.

Obamacare and federal grant allow Georgia to eliminate ADAP waiting list

ATLANTA – Thanks to Obamacare and a timely federal grant, Georgia health officials say they have completely wiped out the nation’s longest waiting list to get live-saving HIV medicine to the poor.

“This reduction of our wait list to zero is a remarkable accomplishment, especially considering where we were in 2011,” DHP Commissioner Brenda Fitzgerald said in a news release.

Until Thursday, Georgia had a woeful record nationally for the past several years as hundreds of clients waited on the ADAP list to get HIV medicine.

Volunteers needed for AIDS Walk & Run San Diego

SAN DIEGO -- While thousands of walkers and runners come together each year in support of AIDS Walk & Run San Diego, its takes an army of volunteers to make the day happen.

Nearly 800 volunteers are needed this year to help with a number of tasks on the day of the event and in advance, including site set-up, route monitors, walk registration volunteers, and pre-event phone banking.

Atlanta to pay $250K to man denied police officer job because of HIV status

ATLANTA -- Lambda Legal said today that it has accepted the settlement offer to resolve the discrimination lawsuit against the City of Atlanta. The lawsuit is on behalf of its anonymous client, who applied to be a police officer with the Atlanta Police Department (APD) but was denied employment because of his HIV status.

As a black gay man and the son of a Baptist minister, I have not always been connected to my own sexual orientation, let alone the LGBT community. While I have always had a strong sense for social justice, I did not live in the gay community during the times when funerals for AIDS victims were nearly a daily occurrence, and, therefore, did not have the deep emotional connection to our community’s struggle with HIV and AIDS.

Being Alive San Diego goes green

SAN DIEGO -- Being Alive HIV/AIDS Services is going green with the collection of plastic bottles and cans to support Daniel’s Pantry that feeds the clients every month.

More than 400 people use Daniel's Pantry each month for a collection of canned goods, rice, fresh fruits and vegetables, and some frozen meat. Being Alive launches Medical Community Fund to preserve HIV/AIDS services

SAN DIEGO -- Being Alive San Diego has announced the "Medical Community Fund," a major fundraising campaign intended to preserve services for San Diegans living with HIV/AIDS, considered some of most vulnerable residents in the county.

Several physicians have already pledged to the fund, and Being Alive hopes to reach other "care givers" in the area to participate. All pledges to the fund up to $50,000 will be matched.

ACTION ALERT: Help elevate voices of MSM around the world

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Global Forum on MSM & HIV (MSMGF) is asking people who identify as gay or MSM (men who have sex with men) to take the 2012 Global Men’s Health and Rights survey.

The survey is designed to gather information on different factors that impact the quality of lives of MSM, including community involvement, sexual happiness, experiences of stigma, and access to services. Ultimately, the information will be used by organizations in our communities to support knowledge generation, policy development, program implementation, and advocacy for the health and human rights of MSM.
