Former Weather Girls diva Martha Wash to headline Disco Tea Dance benefit

PALM SPRINGS – Disco diva Martha Wash of Weather Girls fame will perform at a retro-inspired Disco Tea Dance on Sunday, Sept. 16, from 4 to 10 pm poolside at the Saguaro Hotel, 1800 E. Palm Canyon Drive in Palm Springs.

DJ Jerry Bonham of San Francisco’s annual “Remember the Party” will be spinning classic and iconic disco hits. The event is a benefit for AIDS Assistance Program.

Lambda Legal surveys LGBT and HIV community experiences with public agencies nationwide

NEW YORK -- Lambda Legal today launched a nationwide survey that aims to examine the experiences that people who are LGBT and people living with HIV have had with law enforcement, prisons, courts and schools.

“Bears Care” rummage sale Aug. 11 to benefit HIV/AIDS services

SAN DIEGO -- Bears San Diego and Mr. Bear 2012 Chuck Houghton will present the “Bears Care” rummage sale in August in Hillcrest.

The rummage sale will take place from 9 am to 4 pm Saturday, Aug. 11, in the auditorium at The San Diego LGBT Community Center, 3909 Centre St. at Harvey Milk Street in San Diego, CA 92103.

This is a fundraiser to benefit HIV/AIDS support services through Family Health Centers of San Diego, Special Delivery San Diego and The Center.

In addition to the massive rummage sale, there will also be food for sale and a chance to win a San Diego Harbor cruise.

Scientists hunting for an AIDS vaccine may be getting close

Scientists compare the hunt for an AIDS vaccine to the search for the Holy Grail. And for three decades, it has proved to be about as difficult to find.

Since Robert Gallo and Luc Montagnier identified HIV — the virus that causes AIDS — in 1983, only three vaccine trials have been completed. The first failed to prevent or control infection. The second also failed, mysteriously increasing infection. The third, completed in 2009, provided protection to only about a third of the people receiving it — but how it did that is still unknown.

Elton John urges world show compassion for people living with HIV

Sir Elton John has called for more compassion to be shown to people living with HIV.

The singer was addressing the 19th International AIDS Conference in Washington on Monday.

Sir Elton said: “We need to put our arms around people who are HIV-positive. If you show compassion, no one will be afraid to seek treatment.”

Urging the audience to stand up against stigma, he called for compassion and understanding of all people living with HIV or AIDS, including gay and bisexual men, sex workers and drug addicts.

AIDS Walk & Run San Diego schedules team leader workshops

SAN DIEGO -- Now that San Diego Pride has passed, many in the community begin their plans for participation in the annual AIDS Walk & Run San Diego, which is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 30.

Registration is open and organizers encourage organizations, businesses, groups of friends and others to form teams for the event, which raises money for local HIV/AIDS service providers.

Marginalized populations call for revised approach to global HIV epidemic

WASHINGTON – As HIV rates continue to climb among marginalized groups around the world, the major global networks of gay men, people who use drugs, sex workers, transgender people and people living with HIV have put forth a series of joint recommendations for a more effective global AIDS response.

The recommendations were released today in a set of principles titled “The Robert Carr Doctrine,” named for the well-respected international AIDS activist who died one year ago.

Forum: Assessing the current state of HIV around the world

WASHINGTON – The Global Forum on MSM & HIV (MSMGF) will hold its fifth biennial pre-conference to the International AIDS Conference on Saturday, July 21, to assess the current state of the global HIV epidemic and response among gay men, other men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender people.

Titled “From Stigma to STRENGTH: Strategies for MSM, Transgender People and Allies in a Changing AIDS Landscape,” the full-day event will feature the latest developments in HIV prevention, treatment, research, policy and advocacy concerning MSM and transgender people around the world.

Special Delivery annual Pride BBQ Fundraiser set for July 21

SAN DIEGO -- Plans are set for Special Delivery’s annual LGBT Pride BBQ fundraiser, the nonprofit’s largest annual fundraising event, to take place on the rooftop of the Inn at the Park (formerly Park Manor Suites) from noon to 6 pm on Saturday, July 21.

“Our annual BBQ has become a long-time tradition for locals and visitors after the parade during Pride weekend in San Diego,” said Ruth Henricks, executive director.
