VIDEOS: Everyday people speak out in favor of marriage equality in New York

NEW YORK -- As the battle over marriage equality in New York heats up, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) continues to reach out to the community to encourage support of legislation that would legalize same-sex marriage in the state.

As part of its New Yorkers for Marriage Equality campaign, HRC has released a series of videos featuring high-profile New Yorkers expressing support for marriage equality in the Empire State.

VIDEOS in English & Spanish: Legally married couple facing deportation due to DOMA share their story

NEW YORK -- Cristina Alcota and Monica Ojeda were legally married in the United States but face possible separation due to the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).

While the couple was married in Connecticut, federal immigration protections do not apply to same-sex couples because of DOMA.

To help tell their story, Freedom to Marry and In The Life Media recently released a video spotlighting Alcota and Ojeda's plight.

Focus on the Family president believes anti-gay side has "probably lost" on marriage

NEW YORK – The head of the anti-gay Focus on the Family is beginning to think that his kind has lost the battle over marriage equality.

In an interview in the June 4, 2011 issue of World Magazine, Jim Daly, president and CEO of Focus on the Family, said that the opponents of equality are being repudiated by young people and have "probably lost" on marriage:

Minnesota to vote on gay marriage ban

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- After hours of poignant, somber testimony, a Republican plan to ban gay marriage in the Minnesota Constitution passed the Minnesota House on Saturday.

Amid the din of chants against the measure booming through the marble halls outside the chamber, the House of Representatives took up the proposal, and after five hours of speeches voted 70-62 to place a question on the ballot in the 2012 general election about whether the constitution should be changed to say that marriage is the union of a man and a woman.

Gallup Poll: Majority of Americans support marriage equality

WASHINGTON – This morning Gallup released a groundbreaking poll showing a majority of the American people (53%) support the marriage of committed gay and lesbian couples.

This is just one of several major polls to confirm the sea change in public opinion on the issue of marriage equality.

“This year marks a significant uptick in support for legalizing same-sex marriage, exceeding the symbolic 50% mark for the first time in Gallup’s history,” Gallup said in a statement.

NEW YORK -- In its continued series of videos from well-known New Yorkers who support marriage equality in their home state, Vogue magazine editor-in-chief Anna Wintour is the latest to film a "New Yorkers for Marriage Equality" video.

"As far as I’m concerned, having the right to say ‘I Do’ is as fundamental as the right to vote," Wintour states clearly in the video.

VIDEOS: Famous New York chefs stand up for marriage equality

NEW YORK -- Famous New York chefs Mario Batali, David Chang and Tom Colicchio have joined the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) in supporting marriage equality in New York.

The chefs have each made videos for HRC's "New Yorkers for Marriage Equality" campaign. In the videos the three chefs speak humorously, but from their hearts, of the importance of fairness and equality under the law.

EQCA seeks community input on a proposed ballot initiative to overturn Prop. 8

SAN FRANCISCO -- Equality California (EQCA) has put together a survey and a series of town hall meetings across the state to discuss the possibility of putting a measure on the ballot in 2012 to overturn Proposition 8. If the measure were successful, marriage equality would be restored in the state.

EQCA says that conversations have started about the possibility of taking such a measure to the ballot because of the numerous delays in the federal case against Proposition 8.

Bill Clinton: "Achieving a more perfect union" includes marriage equality

NEW YORK -- As supporters of marriage equality push for a vote on the issue in the New York state legislature, former President Bill Clinton recently released a statement expressing his support of the measure.

The current legislative session ends in June, and proponents hope to see the vote take place before legislators take off for their summer recess.

The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) secured Clinton's statement, which reads:
