Heterosexual couple in UK refused civil partnership

BRISTOL, England -- A heterosexual Quaker couple, Ian Goggin and Kristin Skarsholt, were refused a civil partnership at the Bristol Register Office Tuesday morning.

The registrar cited the country's legal ban on opposite-sex civil partnerships as the reason for the refusal.

"We are disappointed that we were not able to have our relationship legally recognized," said Skarsholt, commenting on the refusal.

Gay couple married via Skype file complaint against Dallas Morning News for not publishing announcement

DALLAS -- A gay couple have filed a discrimination complaint against The Dallas Morning News for refusing to publish their same-sex wedding announcement.

Mark Reed-Walkup and Dante Walkup, who were legally married in Washington, D.C., in October, filed the complaint on Friday. The couple’s wedding has made international news in recent weeks because it was held in Dallas but officiated from D.C. via Skype.

Anti-gay NOM expands target, opposes civil unions

WASHINGTON --The National Organization for Marriage, the nation’s leading anti-gay group whose stated mission is to stop same-sex marriage, is actively working to defeat the passage of the Religious Freedom Protection and Civil Union Act (SB 1716) in Illinois.

This bill would allow same-sex couples to enter into a legal civil union in the state; it does not provide for same-sex marriages. A vote on the bill is expected soon in the Illinois legislature.

EQCA is looking for equality-minded people to take the plunge

LOS ANGELES -- Equality California (EQCA) is looking for people to brave a pool of freezing water in the dead of winter - all in the name of equality.

On Jan. 15, 2011, teams of people devoted to full LGBT equality will take the Polar Plunge for Equality.

The participants' mission will be to jump into a pool of freezing cold water, right after they wow the audience and judges with a creative, unusual or goofy routine.

My partner, Dante Walkup, and I have been in a committed relationship for 10 years.

We didn’t want to travel out of Texas to get married because many of our friends and family would not be able to attend the ceremony.

We were determined to wait until marriage equality finally arrived. We believed the courts would eventually rule that the ban on gay marriage clearly violates the constitutional right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for gays and lesbians.

Although Martin admits to King that he and his partner are not currently serious about marriage, he wants the option available to him in the country that he pays his taxes.

“We can go to Spain and get married,” said Martin. “We can go to Argentina and get married, but why do we have to go somewhere else? Why can’t I do it in my country where the laws are protecting me?”

Lambda Legal launches “Thank You Iowa Judges” campaign

NEW YORK -- Lambda Legal today launched the "Thank you Iowa Judges" pledge. Antigay groups spent nearly $1 million on a campaign successfully ousting three Iowa Supreme Court Justices for their role in striking down as unconstitutional Iowa’s ban on marriage for same-sex couples.

VIDEO: Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon are New Yorkers for Marriage Equality

WASHINGTON – More and more well-known New Yorkers are standing up and expressing their support for marriage equality in the state.

The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) today released the seventh video of the “New Yorkers for Marriage Equality” campaign, which features actors Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon, the first married couple of the series. The campaign raises the public profile of marriage equality in the Empire State following the win of three marriage equality supportive state senators last week.
