Rhode Island House may vote on marriage equality in January

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- House Speaker Gordon Fox pledged on Saturday that the R.I. House of Representatives will vote before the end of January on whether to legalize same-sex marriage.

Fox, a Providence Democrat who’s in the toughest re-election fight of his 20-year career, added specificity to the pledge he made in an interview on WPRI 12′s Newsmakers earlier this year, when he announced he would call a vote in the House on gay marriage during the 2013 session if he got re-elected.

Latest poll: Majority of Minnesota voters oppose marriage-ban amendment

The proposed Minnesota marriage amendment, which would define marriage as between one man and one woman, does not appear to have the support of a majority of voters, according to the final pre-election day poll by Public Policy Polling.

VIDEO: Mainers United make final push for marriage equality vote

PORTLAND, Maine -- Mainers United have unleashed two new ads in support of marriage equality in the week leading up to the Nov. 6 election.

One ad features the son of a lesbian couple, an honor roll student and athlete, who says he wants his moms to have the same rights to marry that he has.

The other ad features a straight couple, one of whom is a teacher, who explain that they talk to their children about LGBT people, marriage and family values – not schools.

Maine will vote on Question 1 on Tuesday. A “yes” vote will allow gay and lesbian couples in Maine to marry.

HRC: Brad Pitt makes $100,000 gift to support marriage equality

WASHINGTON – Brad Pitt, an outspoken supporter of LGBT rights, had given a $100,000 gift to support marriage-equality efforts across the U.S.

The Human Rights Campaign said today that Pitt has agreed to match contributions from HRC members and supporters up to $100,000 in order to direct resources to the marriage campaigns entering their final week in Maine, Maryland, Minnesota and Washington state.

Bill and Melinda Gates donate additional $500,000 to Washington marriage equality campaign

Microsoft Chairman and co-founder Bill Gates, and his wife Melinda, have donated an additional $500,000 to the campaign to uphold Washington's state's marriage equality law.

The announcement Tuesday comes from Washington United for Marriage, the broad coalition working to approve Referendum 74, the November ballot initiative that will ask voters to approve or reject the same-sex marriage law passed in the legislature and signed by Gov. Chris Gregoire earlier this year.

Marriage equality in New York survives court challenge

NEW YORK – Marriage equality is safe in New York state.

Today, the state Court of Appeals denied a request by an Evangelical group called New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms that sought to overturn the marriage equality law that was approved by the state legislature and signed by the governor in June 2011.

This is the second attempt to overturn the marriage law. In early July, a state appellate court dismissed the challenge by the Evangelical group that claimed that the New York state Senate had violated the Open Meetings Law when it voted to approve the law.
