Katharine Lee Bates, born Aug. 12, 1859, was a songwriter, poet and educator. She is best known for writing “America the Beautiful.”

Los Angeles Unified School District collaborates with LGBT History Month

LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), the nation’s second-largest school district, has collaborated with Equality Forum for this month's LGBT History Month.

The district will utilize the free LGBT History Month online educational resources to educate its students about the contributions of LGBT individuals throughout time.

The LAUSD educational collaboration follows the passage of the FAIR Education Act in 2011, making California the first state to require public schools to teach LGBT inclusive history.

Fundraiser and book signing to benefit CESCaL educators conference

SAN DIEGO -- To raise money for the only annual national educator conference focused on LGBTQ youth - Supporting Students ~ Saving Lives - a fundraiser and book release party will be held Thursday, Oct. 4, at the At HOM store in Little Italy.

Event organizers hope that community members will come out and support the fundraiser, especially in light of the startling statistics:

- Nine out of 10 LGBT students are harassed at school.

- LGBT students are 4 times more likely to attempt suicide.

- LGBTQ students have a dropout rate three times the national average.

Ann Bannon, born Sept. 15, 1932, is an author best known for her lesbian-themed fiction series, “The Beebo Brinker Chronicles.” The popularity of the novels earned her the title “The Queen of Lesbian Pulp Fiction.”

Petition calls on UPS to end corporate donations to anti-gay Boy Scouts

IOWA CITY, Iowa — After successively lobbying Intel Corp. to end its corporate contributions to the Boy Scouts of America last month, LGBT rights advocate Zach Wahls has set his sights on United Parcel Service.

Wahls, an Eagle Scout raised by two lesbian moms, noted that in 2010, UPS gave nearly $167,000 to the Boy Scouts of America, despite the organization’s policy banning gay Scouts and leaders from participating.

Roberta Achtenberg, born July 20, 1950, serves as a commissioner of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. She is the first openly gay presidential appointee confirmed by the Senate.

North County LGBTQ Resource Center to host open house for parents

OCEANSIDE, Calif. -- The North County LGBTQ Resource Center will host an open house for parents and others who are curious about the LGBT community and the center's programs on Friday, Sept. 28, from 7-9 pm.

Advertised as an event for parents, tutors, legal guardians and/or adults with questions about the LGBT community, the North County LGBTQ Resource Center will be present a panel during the event, which will address issues such as LGBTQ culture, how to best support LGBTQ youth, and mental, physical and spiritual health issues affecting youth.

Report: Critical government surveys omit gay, transgender people

A new report by the Center for American Progress outlines how government data plays a critical role in the country’s policy-making process, but that the lack of reliable data about the gay and transgender population increases the likelihood that stereotypes and myths will shape policies that impact the LGBT community.
