George Takei, Betty DeGeneres to attend CESCaL conference in San Diego this weekend

SAN DIEGO -- The fourth annual national educator conference focused on LGBTQIA youth will take place in San Diego this weekend, Feb. 15-17.

Supporting Students ~ Saving Lives is presented each year by San Diego State University's Center for Excellence in School Counseling and Leadership (CESCaL) and brings together educators from across the country to network, learn, and share resources. The conference is known to be the only event of its type focused on LGBTQIA youth.

GLAAD: Boy Scouts of America looks toward equality, considers lifting ban

News broke Monday that the Boy Scouts of America is "actively considering" an end to the policy that bans gay scouts and leaders. The decision follows a nearly yearlong campaign by GLAAD and Scouts for Equality, as well as Change.org petitions signed by more than 1.2 million people calling for an end to the BSA's ban on gay scouts and scout leaders.

Obama addresses 3,000 LGBT rights advocates in video message

President Barack Obama issued a video statement that aired Friday before 3,000 LGBT rights advocates assembled in Atlanta this week for the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force’s 25th National Conference on LGBT Equality: Creating Change.

The recorded message comes just days following Obama’s second term inaugural address where he called for full LGBT equality.

Restoring Respect conference to promote civility in San Diego's civic dialogue

SAN DIEGO -- Restoring Respect will host its second annual Conference on Restoring Civility to Civic Dialogue on Wednesday, Feb. 20, featuring keynote speaker Eugene Robinson of The Washington Post.

The Restoring Respect initiative is a program of the University of San Diego (USD) that is attempting to promote greater civility in San Diego's civic dialogue.

HRC calls on Defense Secretary to extend benefits to gay and lesbian troops and spouses

WASHINGTON -- As part of the Human Rights Campaign’s ongoing effort to achieve full equality for gay and lesbian service members and their families, HRC is, in addition to calling on Defense Secretary Leon Panetta to issue military IDs to same-sex spouses, urging him to extend every possible benefit not specifically barred by the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).

The revisions would ensure same-sex spouses in the military receive the same benefits afforded all other service members.

Gay travel agency funds SMUG scholarship for LGBT student in Uganda

HOUSTON – Concierge Travel, the largest gay-owned and operated travel agency and tour operator in the state of Texas, has announced its support for Sexual Minorities Uganda (SMUG), a small but important group fighting homophobia in Uganda.

SMUG is a non-profit, non-governmental organization that works toward achieving full legal and social equality for LGBT people in Uganda. Concierge Travel has committed to supporting SMUG over four years, providing a scholarship for an LGBT student enrolled at a university in Uganda.

HRC hires chief foundation officer, who worked at CAP

WASHINGTON – Jeff Krehely is joining the Human Rights Campaign as chief foundation officer.

Krehely currently serves as vice president of the LGBT Research & Communications Project at the Center for American Progress.

In his new role, Krehely will oversee all of the HRC Foundation’s comprehensive programming, which focuses on improving equity in the workplace and healthcare settings, creating more welcoming schools, providing resources and education for LGBT families, and amplifying the voices of LGBT people of faith.
