VIDEO: Dan Savage creates YouTube channel to help gay teens

Sex advice columnist and gay rights activist Dan Savage has launched a YouTube channel called “It Gets Better.” He’s soliciting videos from fans who want to provide support and encouragement to gay teens who face adversity, discrimination and bullying in high school.

Mama’s Kitchen awarded $10,000 grant from ASTRO’s Survivor Circle

SAN DIEGO -- ASTRO, the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology, which was established to provide funding to cancer-support organizations, recently granted $10,000 to Mama's Kitchen.

Mama’s Kitchen, celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, received the gift from ASTRO's Survivor Circle program, which partners with two cancer patient support organizations each year.

To date, ASTRO’s Survivor Circle has raised nearly $170,000 for organizations like Mama’s Kitchen that strive to better the lives of those suffering from cancer.

VIDEO: Binational couples may be left out of U.S. immigration reform

On Sept. 13, the Washington Post published a long front-page news story “Immigration overhaul could leave gay couples out”.

Reform of immigration in America is a key demand of the base of the Democratic Party, particularly Latinos who voted overwhelmingly for President Barack Obama - rowing back gains made by Republicans under President George W. Bush. Obama has cited it as a legislative priority.

“OUT on the Hill” brings top black LGBT leaders to Washington

WASHINGTON -- Dozens of black LGBT people gathered in the nation’s capital for the National Black Justice Coalition’s (NBJC) inaugural “OUT on the Hill” Black LGBT Leadership Summit.

Top African-American LGBT thought leaders, faith leaders, philanthropists and activists are organizing to empower their communities while educating congressional leaders, the Obama administration and federal agencies about black LGBT public policy concerns.

“OUT on the Hill,” held Sept. 15-18, featured a White House briefing, which included presentations from key White House officials and representatives.

IFBP to convene regional Black and Brown Summit in San Diego on Oct. 1-2

SAN DIEGO -- The International Federation of Black Prides (IFBP) will present its second regional Black and Brown Summit in San Diego October 1-2 at The Center in Hillcrest.

The Black/Brown Coalition was first conceptualized by two activists after a training session in March 2007. Carolina Ramos, Latino Services Coordinator at The Center, and Earl Fowlkes, IFBP President/CEO, attended a joint presentation on reaching out to GLBT Communities of Color at the Democratic National Committee Western Region training in Las Vegas.

SAN DIEGO -- As The Center prepares for its 37th Anniversary Gala next month, a reception was held to recognize the last nine chairs of the organization's board of directors.

A large crowd of friends, family, community leaders and others joined former board chairs James Ziegler, Jennifer LeSar, Brian Bazinet, Kevin Tilden, Robert Gleason, Richard Valdez, Todd Gloria, Bob Nelson, and Dr. Shaun Travers at the "Celebrating a Decade of Service Leadership" event last Thursday.

San Diego groups to demonstrate Sunday for release of accused WikiLeaks informant Bradley Manning

SAN DIEGO -- Thirteen progressive organizations in San Diego will hold a public protest this Sunday, Sept. 19, at Fourth and Broadway in front of Horton Plaza in support of accused WikiLeaks whistle-blower Bradley Manning.

Manning has been imprisoned at Quantico, Va., since July 29 and faces up to 52 years in prison if convicted.

Empowering Spirits Foundation's second annual Proud Hearts Reach Out day of service set for Oct. 9

SAN DIEGO — The Empowering Spirits Foundation (ESF) will hold its Proud Hearts Reach Out service events across the nation on Saturday, Oct. 9, ahead of National Coming Out Week.

Community service events will take place in cities across the United States.

In San Diego, where the organization is headquartered, volunteers will begin a canyon restoration project. ESF volunteers will assist the San Diego Park and Recreation Department in restoring the Gonzalez Canyon in Del Mar from 9 a.m. to noon.

Study finds wider view of "family" as gay couples with children are finding acceptance

NEW YORK -- A majority of Americans now say their definition of family includes same-sex couples with children, as well as married gay and lesbian couples.

At the same time, most Americans do not consider unmarried cohabiting couples, either heterosexual or same-sex, to be a family — unless they have children.
