One step closer to a state of equality: Campaigning for Mary Salas in San Diego

Our field team had an amazing experience on Tuesday last week helping some key campaigns for candidates that support us in our fight for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality. I wanted to take a moment to reflect on my experience on the ground with the team working to elect Equality California-endorsed Mary Salas for State Senate District 40.

Released on the same day as the May 25 CNN poll showing almost 80 percent of Americans in favor of DADT repeal, a Gallup poll reveals that attitudes toward gay and lesbian relationships has reached a major turning point – particularly among Catholics and men.

LGBT rights groups and allies join outcry in anti-immigrant measure in Arizona

More than 20 LGBT equality groups and allies issued the following joint statement yesterday:

Arizona’s S.B. 1070 takes the state down a path that will lead to racial profiling, discrimination and anti-immigrant extremism. We stand in solidarity with other individuals, organizations and local governments in rejecting the misrepresentation of immigrants put forth in this unjust and ill-conceived measure.

The Center calls "Sex and the City 2" a "Monolo-magnificient" fundraiser

SAN DIEGO -- San Diegans had the unique opportunity to get carried away at preview screening of "Sex and the City 2" on May 26, one day before it opened nationwide.

All proceeds from the event benefited The LGBT Community Center in Hillcrest, and organizers said they raised $1,668 for The Center.

Win a walk-on role on “True Blood” or a meet-and-greet with Lady Gaga

The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) and LIFEbeat, both nonprofit organizations, are hosting separate auctions online at CharityBuzz.com that feature almost 30 celebrity- and entertainment-related items valued at over $80,000.

GLSEN is auctioning 15 items through Wednesday, June 2. The most notable, valued at $20,000, is a featured walk-on role on HBO’s hit series, “True Blood.” The "extra" is a non-speaking role and the auction winner may bring a guest on the set on the day of taping.

Gutierrez: "No future CIR bill without UAFA"

At a press conference Monday in Chicago, Congressman Luis Gutierrez reiterated his call from last week that moving forward, any comprehensive immigration reform (CIR) legislation must include the Uniting American Families Act. He stressed that any future CIR bill must include UAFA when it is introduced. Congressmen Jared Polis and Mike Quigley joined him at the podium, urging inclusive reform. Several local Chicago LGBT and immigration organizations stood with them, and members of binational couples told their family stories.

Lambda Legal praises Rep. Luis Gutierrez's commitment to same-sex couples and their families in Comprehensive Immigration Reform

CHICAGO -- Rep. Luis Gutierrez, the sponsor of the Comprehensive Immigration Reform for America's Security and Prosperity Act, on Monday announced his support of including same-sex couples and their families in the comprehensive immigration reform bill.

Lambda Legal issued the following statement from Francisco Dueñas, Lambda Legal Proyecto Igualdad coordinator:

"We are pleased to see an outspoken leader like Rep. Gutierrez announce a plan to include same-sex couples and their families in a comprehensive immigration reform bill.

If you haven’t read it, you should. As I read, I reflected on the legacy of Harvey Milk. And I realized how much his life and vision guide our work as a movement.
