Before any of us in the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBTQ) communities laud Malcolm X as our new gay icon or castigate him for being a black heterosexist nationalist on the "down low," we might need to closely examine the recent revelation that for a period in his life Malcolm X engaged in same-sex relationships.

Also, before any of us in the African-American community flatly dismiss these assertions as part and parcel of a racist conspiratorial propaganda machine that is out to discredit our brother Malcolm, we need, at least, to hear these nagging claims.

It has been not quite a century since Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was assassinated in January 1948 at the age of 78 in New Delhi, India, and the bevy of hagiographies on him are now being replaced with truth-telling biographies on the Gandhi nobody knew.

The most recent one is titled "GREAT SOUL: Mahatma Gandhi and His Struggle With India” by Joseph Lelyveld.

In advance of a vote on an ordinance that would severely restrict access to medical cannabis in the city, the San Diego City Council published a map as part of its legislative packet which shows areas where a collective could be located in San Diego under the ordinance as written.

Unfortunately the map is inaccurate and conceals the severity of the restrictions being considered.

Last Thursday, I visited a professor in her temporary office. She was perched at an oddly placed desk amid unpacked boxes, all under a light patina of dust and the discomfort of passing disorder.
