COMMENTARY: Don’t criticize what you don’t know

I got a lesson in acceptance and a lesson in understanding, over the weekend. I am the person who is always writing about how others need to be more accepting and understanding of the gay community and it seems I was the one who needed to be taught the lesson.

I went to my granddaughter’s quinceanera. My daughter Stacey married a Latino man who has a beautiful daughter by a previous marriage, and she turned 15 this month. I knew nothing of quinceaneras - I had to look up how to spell it – that’s how much I knew.

COMMENTARY: I didn’t ask for the anal probe! * | VIDEO

In the realm of women and their pregnancies, there are two basic types of ultrasounds. There’s the type folks commonly think of being performed on a pregnant woman’s belly. This type entails the jelly, the transducer that fits in the palm of the technician’s hand, the screen with the captured image of a fetus, and the proud parental assumption that that shadowy oblong shape is the biggest penis ever seen on a fetus. Nonetheless, it’s a sweetly benign image, stereotyped in popular media and other fantasies.

COMMENTARY: The Boy Scouts, another closed door for black GBTQ youth

The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) and the Black Church are rightly lauded for molding young black men into adult leaders. BSA troops have produced distinguished African-American Scouts like retired four-star general Colin Powell, six-time NBA champion Michael Jordan and Heisman Trophy winner Herschel Walker.

African-American participation in the Boy Scout movement dates to 1911, and its impact has not only forced the integration of young black males into the organization, but also continues to address many of the challenges these young males confront today.

Anti-gay FRC urges Congress to "pressure the Supreme Court" on marriage cases

The Family Research Council has launched what it is describing as “an ambitious, no-holds-barred campaign to keep marriage as between one man and one woman and preserve the American family.”

COMMENTARY: Disowning of gay children is the abomination

I’ve been reading about these Christian parents who believe they have somehow failed as a parent because their child is gay. These are inevitably the parents who have disowned their child for being gay.

Christian parents who disown their children do so because they are told that homosexuality is an abomination, and Scripture does permit parents to have a wayward son put to death by stoning and for simply being a drunkard or immoral. (Deuteronomy 21: 18-21). This whole stoning thing isn’t allowed in the 21st century, at least in the western world, so the parents disown the child.

LETTER TO THE COMMUNITY: Goodbye from the National Association of People with AIDS

The National Association of People with AIDS (NAPWA) – the largest, oldest, and most trusted voice for the 1.2 million People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) in the U.S. – has ceased operations and has filed a petition in United States Bankruptcy Court to discharge its debts in bankruptcy and liquidate.

COMMENTARY: Time for a gay-friendly Pope

Just hours after Pope Benedict XVI announced his unexpected resignation, a bolt of lightning struck St. Peter’s Basilica.

Many say it's unequivocally a sign from God.

If so, I'm hoping it's an Amen moment signaling the end of an oppressive era of LGBTQ bashing as the church now moves forward.

EDITOR'S NOTEBOOK: AP shows its homophobia

The international news service that banned to use of the word “homophobia” has now banished the use of the words “husband” and “wife” to described the spouse of legally wed gay and lesbian couples.

How homophobic!

The Associated Press, once considered the Rolls-Royce of news services but now watching its reputation tarnishing before their very eyes, blunders yet again with today’s strange update to its Stylebook. Here is the memo:

COMMENTARY: Born in a small town and how it impacted my coming out

I had a friend from what seems a lifetime ago get in contact with me last week. I was thrilled to see her name pop up, and I immediately returned a little note. We've been writing back and forth catching each other up on our lives.

Unlike me, this friend had the courage to come out, leave our home town and live her own life away from the prying eyes and three-party phone lines and family living on every corner or town. She has been with her partner since 1977, living openly and not worrying about what the world thought or felt or did. She was simply living her life.

COMMENTARY: The great Valentine’s Day gift dilemma

Valentine’s Day is Thursday, and for those who are not headed to the shooting range, with exes’ mug shots for targets, there are plentiful options for gift giving. The trick is to determine the right gift.
