Why California needs the Property Assessed Clean Energy Financing program

The Federal Housing Finance Agency’s (FHFA) has decided against the Property Assessed Clean Energy Financing (PACE) program.

I am deeply disappointed that the FHFA has chosen not to support a federal stimulus program that would make it cheaper for Californians to invest in energy efficiency.

Americans are subsidizing Afghanistan’s economic development

Americans continue to get fed propaganda by our corporate-led government, military and media.

In early June, the New York Times reported the “discovery” of vast mineral resources in Afghanistan as follows:

"Armed with the old Russian charts, the United States Geological Survey began a series of aerial surveys of Afghanistan’s mineral resources in 2006, using advanced gravity and magnetic measuring equipment attached to an old Navy Orion P-3 aircraft that flew over about 70 percent of the country.

COMMENTARY: Proud to vote no on Proposition 23

As San Diego Pride approaches, we deserve to both celebrate and take stock of all that we do for our own equality and for the whole globe.

As I pointed out in a SDGLN, polls show that the LGBT community leads the nation in Green awareness, and our ethics embody the desire to save both nature and humanity from the rapidly growing dangers of a very real warming of the Earth’s climate.

COMMENTARY: From sea to shining sea, seeing support building for marriage equality

Almost 20 years ago, the Hawaii State Supreme Court indicated same-sex couples might have the right to marry under their state constitution. In response, the U.S. Congress passed and President Bill Clinton signed the so-called Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) that not only created an exemption to the Constitution’s Full Faith and Credit Clause by saying that other states wouldn't have to recognize marriages for same-sex couples (Section 2), but also defined marriage as between a man and a woman for the purposes of federal recognition (Section 3).

Stephen Whitburn: our next generation LGBT leader

On the evening of Nov. 4, 2008, Stephen Whitburn stood with his supporters in Golden Hall watching his spirited race for San Diego City Council come up short to Todd Gloria.

Whitburn was the quintessential outsider candidate in 2008 – running on an open government, “neighborhoods first” platform. That reformer message won him the endorsement of City Councilmember Donna Frye and delivered an energized core group of grass-roots supporters.

VIDEO: Poker scene from "Louie" is provocative, thought-provoking

I’m not sure “Louie,” a new comedy on FX, will be a hit or not, but it has already provided a “must see” moment on television.

In Episode 2, Louie C.K. and his buddies are sitting around a table playing poker when the guys get around to grilling their gay friend about what he does in his private sex life. The seven-minute scene is one of the most provocative and astonishing moments in recent memory, especially when Louie asks his gay friend whether he was offended by the slur “faggot.”

State Senate working to maintain services with less revenue

While California’s economy shows signs of recovery, the state remains challenged by lower-than-expected revenue. The budget problem – the difference between program costs and anticipated revenue – is approximately $19.1 billion. The Legislature will need to close this deficit while maintaining basic state services.

COMMENTARY: Hail to Google for treating gay and lesbian employees fairly

Google deserves praise for its innovative plan to pay gay and lesbian employees using domestic partner health benefits more money than married heterosexual employees.

It’s a matter of fairness.

Let’s explain why.

Domestic partners pay more taxes on health benefits than heterosexual couples. The New York Times cited a study showing that gay and lesbian couples owe Uncle Sam about $1,069 more per year in taxes when they itemize their domestic partner benefits.

Google’s plan would make up the difference for gay and lesbian couples who work for the company.

Solutions to the Gulf spill hide everywhere in plain sight

Editor's note: Sophie B. Hawkins came to San Diego on May 19 for a show at Anthology and, at the same time, launched the start of her fundraising affiliation with the Waterkeeper Alliance, a network of on-the-water advocates who patrol and protect over 100,000 miles of rivers, streams and coastlines across the world's continents. The Gulf Coast region members of the Alliance (Apalachiacola Keeper, Emerald Coast Keeper, Mobile Baykeeper, Louisiana Bayoukeeper and Lower Mississippi Keeper) are the first line of defense during the BP oil disaster recovery efforts.
