It’s time for authentic LGBT leadership

The recent troubles at the Gay & Lesbian Times (GLT) along with the previous troubles at Auntie Helen’s, and, earlier this year, San Diego Pride, have afforded us all the perfect opportunities to ridicule and chastise everyone involved in those mishaps. But now that the dust from those “breaking stories” has settled, have you noticed that the LGBT blame games that ensued made zero difference? So I am taking this opportunity (free from the height of a hot local LGBT community scandal) to invite you to evaluate our community and where we stand.

VIDEO: Stephen Colbert is upset that lesbians raise good kids and men are so yesterday

Stephen Colbert tells lesbians to stop creating good examples for our kids, microwaves his boxers and asks Hanna Rosin if men are needed anymore (referencing The Atlantic’s July/August cover story on “The End of Men” – in another hilarious bit on “The Colbert Report.”

Legal Ease: What is it really like to be a prosecutor?

Today, I believe most people view the job of a prosecutor as morally righteous, glamorously appealing, and a career where you can actually “do good.”

I suppose this is to be expected. Almost every television show and movie, as well as years of societal precepts, portray our criminal justice system in black and white, good versus bad, all helping to define this stereotype.

Divisive rhetoric will not solve our nation’s illegal immigration problem

Congressman Brian Bilbray never misses an opportunity to air his illegal immigration rhetoric on local and national news.

In May, after President Obama met with Mexican President Calderon, Bilbray declared: “When President Obama says ‘pathway to citizenship’ he really means amnesty for the 10-20 million illegal immigrants within our borders.”

Bilbray is simply wrong. An earned pathway to citizenship as proposed by the comprehensive immigration reform bill (HR 4321) is not amnesty. An example of amnesty is the 1977 pardon of Vietnam draft evaders.

A call to action from Michelle Obama: Why is it important to us?

First lady Michelle Obama took time out of her busy schedule on Sunday to speak to the service men and women at Camp Pendleton.

She spoke about family readiness and her efforts to ensure that military members and their families, who sacrifice so much for the country, are taken great care of.

The first lady's comments were preceded by Congresswoman Susan Davis and Senator Barbara Boxer, each of whom have also been strong supporters of the military and of the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell (DADT).

Rep. Ike Skelton's comments on DADT are homophobic and out of touch with reality

How out of touch are some members of Congress?

It is almost laughable – if it wasn’t for the disbelief and the anger – to hear Rep. Ike Skelton explain his flimsy opposition to lifting the military’s controversial “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” (DADT) policy.

“What do mommies and daddies say to their 7-year-old child?” Skelton rhetorically asked reporters this week during a media breakfast.

Huh?

Tracy Emblem updates her 2010 campaign

This is the open letter that Tracy Emblem sent to her supporters after Tuesday's primary election.

Dear Friends,

Thank you so much for your commitment to my campaign for United States Congress. Your hard work and efforts brought neighbors together, shed light on important issues, and empowered people in our community to further progress through grassroots work and determination.

An open letter to the citizens of California

Editor's note: Marcotte's 2010 California Protection of Marriage Act got approval last November from the California Secretary of State to seek signatures in an attempt to place his "divorce ban" initiative on the this November's ballot. His frustration in the system mounted as his quest for the 700,000 signatures required failed - but he has not lost his resolve.

Strong mayor is good for San Diego

In one week San Diego city voters will have the opportunity to cast a vote on making the strong mayor form of governance permanent, as its five-year trial period will expire at year-end.

A vote in favor or against Proposition D will have far-reaching implications for San Diego for years to come, and I urge every voter to give the measure careful consideration in reaching a decision.

Imagine a harassment-free education

Editor's Note - A bill is making its way through the Senate and Congress which focuses on enforcing the safety and respect of LGBT children and teens in pubic school. Rochelle Hamilton, who came out as a lesbian at 13, was spotlighted by SDGLN when the ACLU chose her as a spokesperson in support of these bills.
