COMMENTARY: Hillcrest Town Council is the neighborhood's voice

"To provide a voice and enhance the quality of life for Hillcrest renters and homeowners and to support actions that benefit our neighborhood."

This has been the Hillcrest Town Council's (HTC) mission statement since the beginning and this column would not be complete without starting at the beginning where all the pieces of the puzzle came together. The first meeting was Jan. 9, 2007 when a very grassroots group began to put together their voice.

COMMENTARY: Should auld acquaintance be forgot? No, know your enemies!

2012 brought some historic changes within the gay community. Those of us who are lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered (LGBT) are feeling a little more like “Americans” as our God-given rights - which are guaranteed us by the U.S. Constitution – are slowly but surely given back to us.

Still – the media loves those who hate us and will print or air just about any hate-filled rhetoric that will boost their bottom line and keep the haters hating.

COMMENTARY: Why I’m thankful for our strict gun regulations, even if they might not work

Like most everyone else in the country, I listened, read and watched with horror on Dec. 14 as the details of the school shooting in Newtown, Conn. unfolded. I was running errands with my 3-year-old twins, who don’t really know what guns are for or what dying is. We stopped at a pizza joint for lunch, which, unfortunately, had televisions aimed at us from every angle.

COMMENTARY: “So This Is Christmas”

So this is Christmas
And what have you done

The words to this John Lennon song, "Happy Christmas (War Is Over)," have kept repeating over and over in my head the past few weeks. I just keep thinking: “And just what have I done?”

I’m not a big fan of the holiday season. I’m not a cynic. I just find it all overwhelming. I find buying presents for people because I have to and not because I want to, irritating. Spending time with family can be quite joyful, but it can also be stressful and wrought with emotions – good and bad.

COMMENTARY: America's problem, young white men in crisis

The most recent massacre, the one at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, took the lives of 6- and 7-year-olds. It has shaken our nation to its core.

The enormity of this devastation is incalculable. There are the small coffins of the victims killed during a holiday season at a tender age. It is also the death of the safety of a Norman Rockwellian. We now know that none are safe.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: More on Hillcrest Mardi Gras

"The Hillcrest Business Association (HBA) board of directors recently voted to conclude its work on Hillcrest Mardi Gras. Hillcrest Mardi Gras has been a collaborative event produced by many volunteers and community groups. The HBA and the Greater San Diego Business Association Foundation (GSDBAF) have been two of the prominent players in producing this event. By stepping out of this event the HBA also is stepping away from the many disputes that have surrounded the event.

COMMENTARY: Visit to an "insane asylum" proves to be life-altering

The middle-aged woman, her wrinkled face twisted in rage, screamed words at us that made no sense. Her disheveled appearance was shocking enough, but the conditions she was living in were even more appalling.

Down the dark and dank hallway, we stopped to gaze at a grizzled old man, missing most of his teeth, who stared intently at a spot on a wall. It was bare. He was looking at nothing in particular and he appeared completely unaware of his whereabouts or the fact that a busload of college-preparatory high school seniors were standing nearby.

COMMENTARY: Another "Christian" myth - the “war on Christmas”

Here in the United States of America we are supposed to have Freedom of Religion. But I ask you: How can we have freedom of religion without having freedom from religion? How can you have the freedom to practice your personal religious beliefs if you must adhere to governmental laws that are based on the beliefs of any one religion?

The whole Christmas, Virgin Mary, Baby Jesus, Three Wise Men, no room at the inn, manger in a stable, star in the East thing is all about the Christians. This is their tale, their “shining star,” so to speak.

COMMENTARY: Fight the stigma of HIV to help get to zero

As the world came together to acknowledge Word AIDS Day on Dec.1, I was left feeling out of place and out of mind. The official theme of World AIDS Day was “Getting to Zero: Zero new HIV infections. Zero discrimination. Zero AIDS related deaths.”

I reflected on this the other day when I noticed a red mark on my chest. Instantly I thought it was a lesion; a sign I was sick and likely to die. No I’m no hypochondriac, but I am HIV positive. When I was first diagnosed, I thought of Tom Hanks’ face as Andrew Beckett in the 1993 film “Philadelphia.”
