COMMENTARY with VIDEO: Pepper-spraying protesters is so un-American

What has happened to our constitutional rights in America?

The brutal police response of pepper-spraying peaceful Occupy protests across the country violates American rights to assemble and protest.

What happened to the Iraq war veteran at Occupy Oakland is wrong.

What happened to the 84-year-old woman at Occupy Seattle is wrong.

What happened to students at the University of California at Davis is wrong.

COMMENTARY: Queer politics is for the birds

Homophobia runs deep!

So deep that it also impinges on the animal world.

Toronto’s zoo is splitting up a pair of same-gender penguins. These Happy Feet males, Pedro and Buddy -- jokingly referred to as "Brokeback Iceberg" -- have been nesting with each other for a year.

The reason for the boys’ split-up, a zoo official says, is because African penguins are an endangered species.

The pair has what’s known as a "social bond," but it’s not necessarily a "sexual bond," Tom Mason, the zoo’s curator of birds and invertebrates told The Associated Press.

COMMENTARY: Why are Republicans in bed with known anti-gay hate groups?

The Republicans and the Tea Party are hell-bent on making Barack Obama a one-term president, and their tactics are shameful at the very least.

Not only are the conservatives refusing to aid the effort to jump-start an awful economy that went into the toilet under the reckless spending and warmongering by President George W. Bush, one of their own, but they are doing everything in their power to demonize the LGBT community in a blatant attempt to turn out the vote of the Religious Right.

COMMENTARY: David Kato's killer convicted, but Ugandan trial was a sham

Justice Joseph Mulangira of Uganda's Mukono High Court has sentenced Sidney Nsubuga Enoch, 22, the man who confessed to the murder of gay rights activist David Kato, to 30 years in prison.

David Kato was a local and international gay rights activist. His face appeared as one of the hundred outed gay men by Uganda's Rolling Stone tabloid, with the headline "100 Pictures of Uganda's top Homos." Against all odds, Kato won his case in the Uganda courts, against the publishers of the tabloid, where his face appeared next to a headline "Hang Them!"

COMMENTARY: Sexual minorities persecuted in Iran

International observers were recently alarmed by reports that three men were hanged in the Iranian city of Ahvaz for a series of crimes that included engaging in sodomy.

LCR San Diego endorses Nathan Fletcher for mayor

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego chapter of the Log Cabin Republicans (LCR) has chosen to endorse Assemblymember Nathan Fletcher for mayor, it was announced today.

LCR is the only nationwide Republican organization "dedicated to representing the interests of gay and lesbian Americans and their allies." With two gay Republicans also in the San Diego mayor's race, this choice may come as a surprise to some in the county.

COMMENTARY: The truth behind LGBT Weekly’s smear campaign against Carl DeMaio

Lately I find myself shocked, hurt and disappointed by the war LGBT Weekly seems to be mounting against city councilmember and mayoral candidate Carl DeMaio.

In fact, you can read some sort of attack against him in the LGBT Weekly almost every week, and it has become very disturbing.

I say this as a young voter, a community organizer, a veteran, a proud member of the San Diego Democrats for Equality (SDDE), former member of the LGBT redistricting task force, and most importantly, a Democrat.

COMMENTARY: What's wrong with this picture?

A small town café. An eclectic group of folks commune at the breakfast counter, shooting the bucolic bull.

"How’s school?" the older, white man asks.

"It sucks," says the young woman. "I don’t like the students."

"Why? Are they Hispanic students?"

"No, actually, mostly white and privileged."

He doesn’t notice her cringe. He doesn’t notice that she is Hispanic.

And picture this.

A flight home after a hectic trip. A lovely young disciple distracts the businesswoman from her work, hoping to save her first soul.
