Gay candidate's political signs are defaced with slur

Just when I'm feeling optimistic about the progress were making for LGBT Americans, I'm reminded we still have a long way to go.

A few days ago, one of the Victory Fund's endorsed candidates for Congress found the word "fag" spray-painted over a number of his campaign yard signs.

Fag.

It's just paint on cardboard, but that word still feels like a punch in the gut.

COMMENTARY: Fight back against the broken promises on ENDA

Editor's note: This e-mail was sent by GetEQUAL to its followers and the media.

Dear friends,

Congress is leaving town at the end of July to go back to their home districts and campaign for re-election. Unfortunately, just this week, the Washington Post reported that the Democratic leadership has no plans to make good on their promises of taking up ENDA (Employment Non-Discrimination Act) when they return in September.

Sadly, we're not surprised.

COMMENTARY: Sign letter asking Obama administration not to appeal DOMA ruling

We're still waiting for Judge Vaughn Walker's pending decision in the federal Prop. 8 trial. But the marriage equality movement just won another major federal court victory.

A federal judge in Massachusetts ruled that a large part of the "Defense of Marriage Act" -- the 1996 federal law banning recognition of same-sex marriage by the federal government -- is unconstitutional.

VIDEO: In Weekly Address, President Barack Obama talks about solar energy

WASHINGTON – In this week’s address, President Barack Obama announces that the Department of Energy is awarding nearly $2 billion in conditional commitments from the Recovery Act to two solar companies.

Abengoa Solar has agreed to build one of the largest solar plants in the world in Arizona, which will create about 1,600 construction jobs with over 70 percent of the construction components and products manufactured here in the USA. When completed, this plant will provide enough clean energy to power 70,000 homes.

VIDEO: In Weekly Address, President Barack Obama blames Republicans for blocking progress

WASHINGTON -- The president calls on Republicans in Congress to put scoring political points aside, and instead to focus on solving the problems facing the nation.

At the time of this address, the Republican leadership is blocking progress on a bill to boost the economy, retain jobs for teachers and cops, and help people buy their first home; another bill which would hold oil companies accountable for any disasters they cause by removing the current $75 million liability cap; and 136 highly qualified men and women who have been nominated to government positions.

VIDEO: In Weekly Address, President Barack Obama advocates fair pay for doctors

WASHINGTON -- With doctors facing deep cuts in their reimbursements from Medicare unless Congress acts to correct long-standing problems, President Barack Obama calls on Senate Republicans to stop blocking the remedy and pledges to work toward a permanent solution. The cuts would potentially mean widespread trouble for seniors getting needed care.

Electing equality: Voters choose LGBT and pro-LGBT candidates at the polls

Tuesday night's elections were invigorating!

The outcomes are generally very favorable for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Californians and could prove to be history making. There are, however, some dangerous candidates on the horizon that will require our community to be energized and cohesive in order to beat them.

Nearly every single EQCA-endorsed candidate won their primary, and we were hard at work helping to make that happen.

VIDEO: In Weekly Address, President Barack Obama speaks from Louisiana on the BP oil spill

GRAND ISLE, La. -- Speaking from Louisiana, President Barack Obama discusses the hardships local residents and small business owners are facing as a result of the BP oil spill. He pledges to make sure those responsible do not shortchange them.

Water conservation: Thanks for saving, don't forget the summer lawn-watering rules

I congratulate San Diegans for continuing to save water. During the past 11 months that we've been under new water regulations, San Diegans have done a terrific job cutting back and I have no doubt that our solid track record will continue this summer.

San Diegans reduced their water consumption by 9.2% in April compared to April 2009. Overall, water use in the city is down nearly 12% for the fiscal year. City government reduced its water use 26% in April.
