Councilmember Todd Gloria writes on historical preservation, street repairs

The City Council is tackling several big issues this week, and I want to share my thanks for the opportunity to represent such diverse and passionate people in District Three.

Whether the topic is seals in La Jolla or development in Mission Valley, University City or downtown, my email inbox and phone lines prove that I can always count on my constituents to provide input. Beyond the walls of City Hall, my work to improve District Three and San Diego continues.

"We have made significant strides … but there’s more to do"

It has been my honor to serve the people of San Diego’s Second City Council District during my first term in office. I’m running for re-election in the upcoming June primary because I want to continue fighting for fiscal reform, neighborhood services and protecting our beaches and bays.

Why Proposition 16 is bad for Californians

California allows cities and counties to purchase electricity or develop it locally through an energy provider of their choice. Currently 68 percent of California’s electricity is generated by investor-owned utilities. Proposition 16, on the June 8 primary ballot, would alter local government’s ability to develop electricity service and is bad for California’s residents and businesses.

New poll shows voters feel unsafe with more guns in public places

The "Open Carry" Assembly Bill, which I authored, would prohibit openly carrying handguns in public places.

The California State Assembly Appropriations Committee approved this legislation, in order to limit openly carrying firearms in public places. New results from a national survey were also released, and they indicate the public’s serious discomfort with the practice.

Thank you for saving San Diego's beach fire pits

San Diego’s beach fire pits will remain available to the public for at least another year, thanks to contributions from the public, two local foundations and the offices of Councilmembers Kevin Faulconer and Sherri Lightner.

The donations will fund the cleaning and maintenance of the city’s 186 concrete fire pits at the city’s beaches and shoreline parks through at least June 2011.

Conservative politician in Virginia seeks re-election, invokes gay boogeyman

STERLING, Va. – District Supervisor Eugene Delgaudio is determined to hold onto his seat at all cost.

The deeply conservative Republican is a fixture in Loudoun County, Va., a wealthy community located within the Washington metropolitan area.

Delgaudio is also executive director of the conservative non-profit group, Public Advocate of the U.S., which rails against gay rights, hate crime laws, abortion, liberals, moderates, among many other issues.

VIDEO: In Weekly Address, Obama reports good news from the auto industry

WASHINGTON -- As the auto industry and financial markets begin to stabilize, President Barack Obama says the government’s emergency interventions are now winding down. He pledges that real reform, particularly on Wall Street, must now begin.

Blanket test in California

SACRAMENTO -- Could voters in the nation’s biggest state fundamentally change the way their executive, legislative and congressional delegations are chosen?

If the polls are to be believed, California voters will do precisely that when they take up a measure on the June 8 primary ballot that would restructure the state’s primary system. While issues of election procedure typically rank low on voters’ agendas, the unprecedentedly sour mood about California government may bolster the measure, which is officially known as Proposition 14.
