VIDEO: In Weekly Address, President Obama says Congress must move forward on Wall Street reform

Remarks of President Barack Obama
Weekly Address
April 17, 2010

There were many causes of the turmoil that ripped through our economy over the past two years. But above all, this crisis was caused by failures in the financial industry. What is clear is that this crisis could have been avoided if Wall Street firms were more accountable, if financial dealings were more transparent, and if consumers and shareholders were given more information and authority to make decisions.

All across America are good, decent folks who meet their obligations each and every day. They work hard. They support their families. They try to make an honest living the best they can. And this weekend, many are sitting down to pay the taxes they owe – not because it’s fun, but because it’s a fundamental responsibility of our citizenship.

'Flipping the Switch' on city's latest major solar-powered installation

SAN DIEGO -- The city celebrated another major step forward in replacing fossil fuel-generated power with clean, renewable energy at city facilities.

A new 945-kilowatt solar power system at the city's Otay Mesa Water Treatment Plant is now producing enough electricity during the daylight hours to meet the total power needs of the plant’s pumping operation.

Ballot initiative reform measure passes Assembly

SACRAMENTO -- A bill to raise the fee for qualifying a ballot measure for the first time in nearly seven decades has passed out of the Assembly.

The bill would raise the fee that was originally set in 1943 from $200 to $2,000 incrementally over a period of six years to bring it more in line with inflation.

I authored the bill because taxpayers were footing the bill for ballot measures by well-funded corporate interests and millionaires and for initiatives filed simply to make political and social statements with no intention of qualifying them for the ballot.

California may owe you money

Over 18,000 items of unclaimed property from the 75th Assembly District - valued at over $34 million - are being held by the state. Some of this property may be yours. One item even belonged to me, a $50 check from my phone company that wasn't forwarded to me after I moved.

Examples of unclaimed property include un-cashed checks like mine, matured insurance policies, and inactive checking or savings accounts - basically any personal asset that has been sitting idle for a long period of time.

This is a week of faithful celebration.

On Monday and Tuesday nights, Jewish families and friends in the United States and around the world gathered for a Seder to commemorate the Exodus from Egypt and the triumph of hope and perseverance over injustice and oppression. On Sunday, my family will join other Christians all over the world in marking the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

A revitalized manufacturing base will stabilize our economy

For far too long our government has allowed our manufacturing jobs to be outsourced to foreign countries. Recently the Blue-Green Alliance, a partnership between labor and environmental groups, called for a comprehensive industrial policy and commitment to rebuild America with green technology and products.

Busby, Emblem battle it out in final months of primary race

Francine Busby and Tracy Emblem have a little over two months to distinguish themselves from each other to the average Democratic voter in the 50th Congressional District.

But it won’t be easy.

To the average left voter, they’re both Democrats, they both supported major bills like the health care package and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, and they both believe Rep. Brian Bilbray is no longer in touch with the 50th Congressional District.

So why vote Busby over her primary opponent Emblem or vice versa?

Video: President Barack Obama Weekly Address - Two major reforms on health care and higher education

The President looks back on a week that saw the passage of two major sets of reforms: one putting Americans in control of their own health care, and one ensuring student loans work for students and families, not as subsidies for bankers and middlemen.

Roberts is confident he’ll be re-elected to Board of Supervisors

If Democrats hope to win the San Diego County Board of Supervisors District 4 seat, Ron Roberts says they’ll have to wait until he resigns.

“It would take my resigning for someone to beat me,” the 16-year board vet said. “I have enormous friendships not just in this district, but throughout the entire city.”
