Every in-the-know San Diego foodie has jumped on the food truck bandwagon. What’s not to love about inventive restaurant-worthy grub on the go? Cheap, convenient, delicious; sign me up. And of course, every earth-conscious local strives to maintain a sustainable green life, from recycling at home and carpooling to work, to feel-good farmer’s market shopping sprees. But what if you could combine these two lifestyle necessities into one super-green mobile service, delivering eco-eats to savvy locals all across the city? I hope you’re hungry, friends, because that day has finally come.
Already a huge hit in Los Angeles and New York, Green Truck has officially launched in San Diego, celebrating a grand opening at the Cape May Block Party in Ocean Beach on Saturday, March 19th.
Green Truck’s mission is very simple: to heal our planet one meal at a time. OK, I know what you’re thinking. You may assume that a truck probably isn’t the best way to spread the gospel of green living. But in addition to cooking with locally grown certified organic ingredients, Green Truck is literally organic itself, running on veggies and sun power. The vegetable oil they use to cook is then used to power food trucks the next day. Furthermore, the commissary kitchen is solar-powered, and if it’s a naturally sunny day, they give unused energy back to the grid. Covering every last detail, all packaging and utensils are either recyclable or compostable, including the utensils, which are made out of potato starch.
OK now that you’ve done your good green deed for the day, let’s focus on the food. Green Truck only uses certified organic ingredients, which protect your body from harmful pesticides and keep pollutants away from plants, animals, and waterways. A few staple menu favorites include the Grilled Chicken Pesto Wrap with free-range chicken breast, housemade basil pesto, mixed greens, tomatoes served on warm lavash bread; Mother Trucker® Vegan Burger – the signature vegan veggie burger, made from scratch out of local vegetables, topped with fresh cut sunflower sprouts, sliced heirloom tomato, onion, and the signature vegan Trucker® sauce; and Wild Caught Mahi Taco – grilled pacific wild caught mahi-mahi, red cabbage, pico de gallo, scratch made white sauce, and either blue corn or wheat flour tortilla. More must try small dishes include Sweet Potato Fries and Heirloom Beet Salad.
In true San Diego mobile dining style, Green Truck will post its daily menu online and share its minute-by-minute whereabouts through social media outlets. For more information and to get the daily scoop, visit greentruckonthego.com, twitter.com/greentruck_sd, and facebook.com/greentrucklove.
