Aloha! Urban Mo’s meets Waikiki in new Mo’s on the Road tour

SAN DIEGO -- Sterling Tours of San Diego has teamed up with Urban Mo’s Bar and Grill in Hillcrest to bring patrons a laidback cure to their wanderlust -- especially if includes a visit to Hawaii.

Scott Borden of Sterling Tours and Mike Saltsman (pictured below) of Urban Mo’s Bar and Grill have collaborated to join together the all-inclusive diversity that is Urban Mo’s, with the leisure that only a tropical paradise can provide.

“If you’re looking for a vacation that’s casual, fun and active-but not too active that you need to be in a gym for weeks of preparation-then this is it,” Borden said.

Borden has been to Hawaii more than 50 times, so he has a vast knowledge of the islands and wants to share the beauty of Waikiki with others. He and Saltsman traveled to Waikiki in January to scout all of the locations and activities for the trip.

The whole concept is to take the diversity that is Urban Mo’s on an island adventure.

“Everyone is welcome to join in on the fun,” Borden said. “We want the trip to reflect the Mo’s experience as much as possible. Gay, lesbian, straight, single, couples, family, friends, even kids are welcome.”

Borden and Saltsman have set the itinerary to have just enough activities mixed with ample amounts of free time so that there is something for everyone.

If you join the Mo’s on the Road tour, your six-day stay in Waikiki will look something like this:

Day 1: Check into the Queen Kapiolani Hotel at Waikiki. Then meet up with the group for a reception dinner. After dinner and cocktails you are free to explore the nightlife on the island or get ready for Day 2 with a good night’s rest.

Day 2: After a leisurely breakfast, everyone will hop onto scooters for a beautiful scenic ride to Hanauma Bay. Once at the bay you can snorkel through coral and exotic aquatic life or take it easy on the beach. On the ride back you can opt to hike to the top of Diamond Head and catch an amazing view of Honolulu.

Day 3: Kick back and pat yourself on the back for gifting yourself some leisure time. This day is full of possibilities, you can take a surfing lesson, ride the waves in an outrigger, rent bikes, go shopping or throw back a mai tai or two and call it a day.

Day 4: Enjoy breakfast with the group and then climb aboard the Surf Bus to experience the beautiful North Shore. A guided tour takes you to the home of the famous Banzai Pipeline and Sunset Beach. Once you arrive you’ll be able to surf, kayak, standup paddleboard, snorkel, hike, bike or simply enjoy the sandy beaches.

Day 5: Use your last day to take in some of the activities you enjoyed the most. This day is finished off with a farewell dinner followed by a final soaking up of the Hawaiian nightlife.

Day 6: Say “aloha” to your week in paradise and head back to reality rested and rejuvenated.

The Mo’s on the Road Tour is accepting up to 40 people for this unique getaway. There are still spots available on the tour, but Borden expects the slots to fill up fast.

“We want to keep the group relatively small to provide a better experience for everyone,” Borden explained, “that way there will be plenty of people to play with, but not so many that you get lost in the mix.”

Chris Shaw, president of Urban Mo’s, was more than happy to lend the Urban Mo’s name and concept to Saltsman, a longtime employee, and Borden.

“I’ve known Mike a very longtime. He’s a travel buff with integrity. We know that people are going to be taken care of and get a great value too,” Shaw said.

The cost of the trip based on double room occupancy is $895 per person. You can also get your own room for $1,175. That price includes: hotel accommodations for five nights at the newly remodeled Queen Kapiolani Hotel, the scooter rental, Surf Bus tour, a large portion of your meals, multiple open-bar cocktail parties and your snorkeling day as well as many other beach and surf activities.

If you want to share a room but don’t know anyone else who’s signed up for the trip, the Mo’s team can help match you with potential roommates.

You will still need to secure your own airfare to and from Waikiki, which can cost $700 to $800, depending on when you book your flight.

“Compared to other trips offered to the LGBT community, we’re very affordable, fun, casual and no six-pack abs required. All ages are welcome and we can accommodate for kids too,” Borden said.

The trip will be from Aug. 3-8 of this year.

“This is our inaugural Mo’s on the Road trip, but we’re already planning and scouting out more locations for our next tour. A New York trip is in the works as is a winter ski trip,” Borden said.
