Jim Winsor’s Out & About: Hillcrest to invade Mission Beach again

Summer has been elusive thus far this year. Two earlier attempts, in March and April, to bring back last year's Reclaim Summer party to had to be postponed due to cold, rainy and/or gloomy weather.
But this Saturday, promoters Tyler Helbe and Colin Wood hope to finally reign it in! Assuming no new last minute weather surprises, the hot ticket event this week looks to be the return of the Reclaim Summer party at the Wavehouse complex in Mission Beach, noon to 7 p.m.

This is one of those rare opportunities for us boys to party at a unique venue outside the gayborhood. And that fact, it seems to me, helped make last year's event a pretty resounding success.

Well, get ready, folks ... this year, the promoters have stepped it up considerably! The party has been moved from the traffic-restricted Soundwave club, to the much larger and more comfortable Wavehouse Bar and Grill area.

The new space can handle up to 1,000 people, louder music, access to the two outdoor waves for flowboarding, and 3 DJs (Nikno, Jeremy Lingvall and Ryan Kenny).

This'll also be the end-of-season party for the San Diego American Flag Football League, so expect to see the 200 league members there in full force. And I understand several boys will be celebrating their birthdays there as well!

As with last year, people will have free access from the party to the beach throughout the day, and there'll be flip cup and beer pong games too. And possibly some water gun action ... we'll see!

ReFresh 'Reclaim Summer After Party' at Numbers

And after a day of Hillcrest invading Mission Beach, the boys at Numbers are going to continue the madness at ReFresh, the Official Reclaim Summer After Party.

They're offering free cover before 11 p.m. with your "Reclaim Summer" wristband, and half-off with wristband afterwards. Also, look for drink specials such as $60 bottles of Svedka, $4 cocktails from 10 to 11 p.m., and $4 Kamikaze Shots all night long. Not to mention the hottest pop and dance music from DJ Mark Nygard.

Fiesta Cantina Anniversary

Another noteworthy event this week is the Fiesta Cantina 2nd Anniversary Party Thursday night, May 19. As some of you already know, the festivities kick-off with an invite-only VIP open bar and food buffet from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.; after that, the party opens up to the general public.

The sexy, outrageous Paris Sukomi Max will be your hostess for the evening; she'll be giving away fabulous prizes via a free raffle all night long, including an iPad, surfboard and much much more. And be sure to come thirsty, because they'll be serving up happy hour prices all night long!

Cub Club SD at Pecs

Cub Club is back, and they have a new home: Pecs Bar! Join them on Thursday night starting at 8 p.m., as hunky DJ Shane Stiel brings his powerful beats. There'll also be great drink specials and, needless to say, hot cubs in abundance in attendance. So, if you're up for a fun night of cubs, drinks, and fun, this'll be the place to be!

Boy Party Bus to Long Beach Pride

For those of you thinking of going up to Long Beach Pride for a day, here's something you might be interested in: Angel Bonilla and the boys at BoyPartyBus.com will be organizing yet another limo bus trip out of San Diego, this one up to the Long Beach Pride festival on Sunday, May 22.

The limo leaves San Diego at 11 a.m., and your $50 ticket includes not only round trip accommodations up to Long Beach and back, and not only alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages during the ride .... but your festival admission as well, a $20 value. Which means you're only really paying $30 to travel (and drink) up there and back. What with gas (and drink) prices as they are now ... not a bad deal!

Tribute to Kyle Tribble at the Brass Rail

As I'm sure many of you already know, we lost an extremely beloved figure in our nightlife scene this week ... Kyle Tribble. So, on Wednesday, May 25th from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. his friends and I will be gathering for an 80's themed party (a favorite of Kyle's) in his honor at The Brass Rail. The music will be thumping and the drinks will be flowing, just as Kyle would have wanted it.

Let's use this time to remember all the good memories and celebrate his life the way he would have loved ... let's party as one family!
