Jim Winsor’s Out & About: Getting pumped up for Amazing High Heel Race, Redwing's 5th anniversary

This Saturday is the Amazing High Heel Race Scavanger Hunt through the heart of Hillcrest!

A fundraiser for the Hillcrest Business Association's Beautification Project (which aims to construct a large gay pride flagpole in Hillcrest at the corner of Normal and University, similar to the iconic one in San Francisco's Castro District), you can read much more in detail about the event and its goals here, and get a rundown on the rules here.

Community support for this event has been overwhelming. Already as I type this, a couple of dozen teams have officially registered; here's a list of the team names signed up thus far online:

Add to this another dozen or so who’ve already signed up offline, plus those expected to the day of the race, and the total number of teams is projected to be over 30. In other words, it's still not too late to enter! This is definitely an event not to miss, so I'll see you all this Saturday.

Eden goes Latin this Wednesday

This coming Wednesday is going to a big night too, as that'll be the debut of the first ever Joe Price Productions Presents event "Escandalo!" A night in Mexico City. An upscale Latin night planned for once a month at Eden, the hottest Latin DJs in San Diego "will stimulate your ears with new mind-blowing beats not heard of in our part of the world!" They also promise "all new unseen HOT, Latin go go dancers!" and food provided by Karina's, "the best and most reputable Mariscos restaurant in San Diego."

Car crash demolishes Park Boulevard bus stop

If you usually wait for the Route 7 northbound at Park and Robinson, you're going to be standing rather than sitting for a while. The entire bus stop (both bench and sign) was destroyed during a car crash last weekend.

According to witnesses, a young man ran out of The Flame on Sunday toward his car parked on Indiana Street (behind Tutti Frutti and the corner liquor store). A concerned friend pursued him out of the club in what appears to have been a well-intentioned effort to prevent him from driving. To no avail, however, the individual eluded his friend, reached his vehicle, drove off Indiana onto Park ... and then immediately plowed into the bus stop on the "Numbers" side of the street.

See the top photo at left for the aftermath. The force of the impact was so great that it knocked the bench into two women who were standing nearby, witnesses said. (I have no info on how badly they were injured.)

When police arrived, the driver was pulled out of the car, "vomiting profusely," the witnesses said. He was taken to the hospital. And then likely to jail, though I couldn't confirm that.

This is another example of some extremely poor decisions involving alcohol consumption and the consequences.

Last week's events

If you were up at LA Pride last weekend and were wondering what happened down here in San Diego last weekend (besides bus stops getting run over), well look no further! SDPIX has their new albums up, including photos from the Wet Finals at Bourbon Street, the Laugh Out Proud comedy night at Martinis Above Fourth, the San Diego Human Dignity Foundation's annual Gala at Anthology, and a busy Sunday afternoon at The Hole. Happy viewing!
