Jim Winsor's Out & About: Flicks has been sold

Flicks, a staple of the San Diego gay nightlife scene for almost 30 years, has been sold.

The new owners are Jeff Jackson, who also owns JT's Pub in Grantville, and his partner Paul. From what I've been told, both are eager and excited to begin a new business adventure catering to a different clientele than they're accustomed to.

This is also bittersweet news, in that we all will be bidding a fond farewell to the former owner, Nigel Mayer. Nigel is a local legend, starting out as a bartender at Flicks and ending up purchasing the bar 20 years ago. He has been prominently active in the community, most notably as co-founder (along with Big Mike) of Ordinary Miracles, a grassroots community organization that has raised more than $250,000 for local charities since 1996.

Nigel plans to move to Nevada and buy a home there, as well as to open a "Flicks Las Vegas" in the not-too-distant future. I'm sure I speak for everyone by wishing him the best of luck in his new endeavors, and thanks for the amazing amount of enjoyment and service he's provided to the community over the years.

Rich's will be off the hook this Saturday night, as it's time once again for the Active Duty military party.

This event will celebrate the first anniversary of the end of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." Look for the Rich's go-go boys in military gear, music by DJ Nikno, and free Active Duty dog tags for the first 500 people through the door. Arrive early to make sure you get your dog tag!

Military or camo attire is encouraged, and there'll be body painting to accessorize yourself. To get a good idea on what to expect, check out photos from past Active Duties HERE.

Doors open at 10 pm, and with a valid military ID there's no cover before 11 pm, or $5 off 11 pm to close. PIX VIP Members receive $5 off cover and front of the line privileges before 11 pm. You can also text SDPIX to 313131 from your cell phone and show the welcome message to the cashier to receive $5 off cover before 11 pm.
