THEATER REVIEW: "The Threepenny Opera" has a bite at UCSD

The joke at the time “The Threepenny Opera” was taking Berlin by storm went like this: “Who wrote it?” “Brecht.” “All right. Who wrote it?”

Bertolt Brecht’s game-changing 1928 social satire lifted copious amounts from its source material – John Gay’s “The Beggar’s Opera,” written exactly 200 years earlier. And translations of poems by François Villon and Rudyard Kipling, which he used as lyrics for Kurt Weill’s incomparable music. Even the most famous line (“Food comes first, and then morality”) was borrowed from Friedrich Schiller.

MOVIE REVIEW: "Bhutto" takes fascinating look at "Kennedys of Pakistan"

Benazir Bhutto’s life is the stuff of fiction and film.

The daughter of privilege, Bhutto was born in 1953 into a family known as “the Kennedys of Pakistan.” Though the Bhutto family went into mourning at the news that a girl had been born, their little daughter went on to become the first woman to lead a Muslim nation.

But the “Kennedy curse” has also dogged the Bhutto family, whose story includes unsolved murders, political intrigue, hijackings and poisonings. Bhutto and her two brothers all came to violent ends.

THEATER REVIEW: “Jane Austen’s Emma: A Musical Romantic Comedy” is delightful

Let’s tell it like it is: Poor little rich girl Emma Woodhouse (Patti Murin) is a busybody who makes it her business to pair people up.

But she’s a spectacularly poor matchmaker, messing with poor little Harriet’s mind so much that it’s a wonder the girl finally escapes with enough sense left to pick her own mate.

Emma’s so bad at it that she doesn’t even recognize her own perfect match until it’s almost too late.

Emma and her coterie are the inspiration for a pair of Tony-nominated talents – composer/lyricist Paul Gordon (“Jane Eyre”) and director Jeff Calhoun (“Big River”).

THEATER REVIEW: “The Story Of My Life” is a mixed blessing

There’s a lot to be said for the small, intimate musical that doesn’t depend on whiz-bang technical wizardry or platoons of cast members high-stepping across the stage.

“The Story Of My Life” is such a small story, about two boys and their friendship. San Diego Musical Theatre presents the San Diego premiere of the show through Feb. 6 at the Lyceum Theatre. Nick DeGruccio directs.
