THEATER REVIEW: “In The Next Room (or the vibrator play)” is a fine, clever and amusing piece

COSTA MESA -- In these occasionally enlightened times, it’s difficult to imagine that the desperate and tightly corseted housewives of the late 19th century were often diagnosed as victims of “hysteria” brought on by “congestion in the womb” when all they needed was more or better action in the bedroom.

But playwright (and Pulitzer Prize finalist) Sarah Ruhl is here to explain it all for us in “In The Next Room (or the vibrator play),” running through Oct. 17 at South Coast Repertory Theatre. Casey Stangl directs.

THEATER REVIEW: Pulitzer Prize-winning “Ruined” plays through Oct. 17 at Geffen Theatre

LOS ANGELES -- It may be difficult to imagine a brothel as a safe haven for women, but that’s the reality for Josephine, Salima and Sophie in war-torn Congo.

The bar/brothel is a recreational outpost for passing warriors in a small Congolese mining town. Here Mama Nadi (Portia), like Brecht’s Mother Courage (the play’s inspiration), makes her living from the war, dealing with traveling salesmen like Christian (Russell G. Jones) and diamond merchant Mr. Harari (Tom Mardirosian), and selling liquor and female company to the military.
