In season: Hass, Fuerte avocados are a Southern California treasure

Next time you take an avocado for granted, consider this: the farmer who harvested the fruit likely spent hours balanced precariously atop a 20-foot ladder, one hand clasping on for balance, the other reaching out with a ten-foot clipper pole, carefully cutting individual fruit from a tree that can reach up to 65 feet high. Avocados, although grown by over 6,000 farmers in California, are not the easiest fruit to harvest.

To Market: Seafood City, here we come

Given that fusion and global cuisine are so hot (as well as a direct reflection of our national experience), it’s hard to understand how one of the most fundamental food traditions seems to keep eluding mainstream popularity.

I’m talking, of course, about Filipino food, a cuisine that embraces Southeast Asian, Latin (Spanish and Mexican), Chinese and native traditions.

Lesbians that rock _ The Nauticals

The Nauticals is a queer band with a large queer following.

Lucky for us they will be playing a big show at The Flame on Saturday, May 15.

This band has something for everyone and they put on a show you cannot take your eyes or ears off of.

I have attended a few of their past shows and to say I was impressed is an understatement. The band is comprised of Crystal Hubrecht, 22, and Jason Villalobos, 23, who have been playing together since high school.

One night only: Carnival fundraiser returns to Bourbon Street on May 15

If you attended last year’s Carnival, stop reading because you already know it is going to be a good time – just go. If you did not attend, do not miss out again this year.

For one night only, on Saturday, May 15, Bourbon Street will be unrecognizable even to its regular bar patrons. The entire venue will be transformed into a Carnival.

Ripen your palate with a strawberry pick-me-up

Lentil Strawberry Salad with Strawberry Vinaigrette

This unusual use for strawberries marries the sweet fruit with the savory, earthy flavor of lentils. Serve it as a side dish to roast chicken or pork, or toss with leafy greens for a hearty salad. The vinaigrette will keep, covered tightly in the fridge, for up to a week.

1 pint strawberries

1 cup olive oil

1 Tablespoon white balsamic vinegar

1 sprig thyme

Salt

Pepper

2 cups lentils, cooked

1 cup mint, chopped fine

In Season: Decadent strawberries sweet in springtime

One of the most delicious benefits of living in San Diego is the luxuriously long strawberry season.

As early as late January, these bright red fruits appear at farmers market stalls, announcing a presence that will last well through the end of the summer. Yet, while the season is long, only a portion of it produces strawberries at their peak—when their appearance is glistening, their aroma tantalizing and their flavor decadently sweet. From now till mid-June, it’s strawberry time.

Cinco de Mayo: Perfect your margarita, just in time

Most people don’t need a reason to drink margaritas, but this Wednesday – otherwise known as Cinco do Mayo – Mexican bars and restaurants will be stuffed like pinatas with folks searching for the perfect margarita.

You can skip the crowds and make your own margaritas at home because Juan Calderon, certified sommelier and beverage manager at downtown’s El Vitral Restaurant and Tequila Lounge is going to tell you how to make the ideal concoction.
