Travel Watch: Montreal is the queen of queer Quebec

MONTREAL -- Originally named “Ville-Marie” or “City of Mary” for you Anglophones, Montreal is a chic, sophisticated gay destination.

The city is the second-largest primarily French speaking city in the world -- after Paris. That being said, most residents also speak English and getting around is pretty manageable. With triple-peaked Mount Royal in the background, the view of downtown Montreal is a beautiful sight to behold.

Carry-on fees ‘ridiculous,’ transportation secretary says

Spirit Airlines’ decision to begin charging passengers for carry-on luggage — while lowering some fares to a penny — has caught the attention of the federal government, as many predicted it would. Christopher Elliott interviews Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood about this and other airline issues.

Destination: Gay Beirut and beyond

San Francisco, Barcelona, Sydney and … Beirut? As surprising as it sounds, the buzz is building around Beirut, Lebanon, as a gay destination.

The New York Times dubbed Lebanon's capital "the Provincetown of the Middle East" in a 2009 article and the winter 2010 edition of Netherlands-based Winq magazine devoted eight pages to the city, citing its emergence as "the (gay) party capital of the Middle East."

Travel Watch: Bulgaria is bold and beautiful

“You know, Bulgarians are the first European people in the world,” an older gentleman tells me just minutes after stepping off of my bus. “We also invented the saddle and horseback riding.”

These first few moments are telling of the national pride and history this once mighty and now re-emerging Eastern European nation possesses. Nowhere is that past more apparent than in the country’s bustling capital - Sofia.

Travel Watch: Paradise found in Delray Beach, Fla.

For those who think that South Florida’s gay scene is confined to South Beach, a trip north to Delray Beach is like a breath of fresh air.

Delray Beach provides a sunny, relaxing, slower-paced getaway only an hour’s drive north of Miami. Delray Beach has a quiet, small-town feel, but no one will give a second glance at a same-sex couple holding hands on the beach. There’s plenty to do in town, and the club scene, when you want it, is no more than half an hour away.

You too can escape

So, the defense of an equal rights law passing in Kalamazoo, Michigan last year grabbed your attention? And by more than 2-1? Well, it wasn’t about marriage, or even domestic partnerships, but two out of three Kalamazoo voters thought we were worthy of being equal at some level.

Travel Blog: Enjoying a late winter solstice on an Atlantis cruise

SOMEWHERE AT SEA -- "I am from Turkey. This is my 22nd Atlantis cruise and second aboard the Solstice. I love these cruises."

This enthusiastic quotation isn't from a fellow passenger. It's from one of the heterosexual crewmembers.

When gay cruising started about 25 years ago by Atlantis' sister company, tour and cruse operator RSVP, it was a very different world. Many crewmembers, especially men, opted not to work aboard the gay cruises. Now, most crewmembers clamor to work these cruises.
