Read about Mary B's Australia adventure

Editor's note: Mary Buckheit is a contributor to SDGLN and other media.

I’ve never really had a Bucket List, but if I did, it would obviously be called The Buckheit List.

On top the top, in bright red ink, I would have slated the six subtropical states of Australia as the most desirable destination for my feets to one day feel beneath them.

Whistler WinterPRIDE: Boards, boys and beers

Moments after arriving in Whistler, Canada, I find myself walking down the main drag in a harness, with straps dangling and my crotch scrunched up in a tidy triangle. And the boys are staring at me. I hadn’t noticed before, but more and more gays are revealing themselves with their stares as my boyfriend Kevin and I walk down Skiers Approach towards the slopes.

"Who knew that I would be in a harness so fast," I joke, elbowing Kevin as a few scattered groups of North Face-clad men looked our way. Kevin rolls his eyes, marking the official start of my WinterPRIDE!

Escape to Bueno Aires, Argentina, where there is romance in every breath

"On this night of a thousand stars
Let me take you to heaven's door
Where the music of love's guitars
Plays for evermore

In the glow of those twinkling lights
We shall love through eternity
On this night in a million nights
Fly away with me …”

These amazing words are from the pen of Tim Rice and combined with Andrew Lloyd Webber’s score, the rock opera "Evita" swept through stages around the world in 1979. The uber-sensual film starring Madonna opened in 1997 and already is a cult classic.

For travelers, D.C. is the nation's cultural capitol

WASHINGTON -- I slipped out from the Renaissance Dupont Circle into a frozen wall of sleety rain, and it was perfect: Today was a museum day.

Of course, I had to safely manage the trips in between museums! The overnight icing had made icicles of my original plan to grab a bike from the pervasive Capitol Bikeshare program, so I set out on foot towards the National Mall.

Being the capitol of the United States, Washington, D.C., is a hotbed of cultural activities. Every cultural organization at least has an office here, which means that there is a critical mass of excellent arts here.

Anza-Borrego: Rugged, wild, sizzling hot, and close to you

If you are looking for the perfect daytrip or when your annual visitors need a new day trip, or you really need them to take an overnight venture, this wonderful desert on the south side of the Santa Rosa Mountains fits the bill very nicely.

Rugged and wild. It sounds like the recent weekend warriors for the Leather Pride Festival, but this is actually a description of the balmy days and starry nights of Anza Borrego State Park, a vast under-populated region.

Escape and discover food columnist's favorite California restaurants

You Too Can Escape has appeared in The BottomLine about 200 times since 1999.

One of my reader’s favorite parts is the restaurant recommendation portion of the column. Due to the fact that one of the most popular activities among travelers worldwide is eating at local dining favorites.

Avoiding the ordinary is a theme of this column so many unique restaurants have been recommended over the last decade. This column is dedicated to those finds in the great state of California. Clip this column and save it for your next trips around the golden state. Cheers!

TRAVEL ADVENTURES: Reasons I will keep visiting Monterey, Calif., until I die

MONTEREY, Calif. -- As I lay there all tied up in knots, with my right leg piercing the air near my ear, all I could think about was sea otters. Never mind the fact that my rational mind was screaming, “Your LEG does not belong near your EAR.”

My creative mind was off with the sea otters, frolicking, swimming backwards, and fetching shiny ornaments for a reward of an abalone liberated from its pesky shell.

Ready to party at the Ozzie Mardi Gras? Check out “Gaystralia” and the OUTback

Welcome to the land Down Under!

It’s difficult to decide where to begin when talking about Australia. There’s that quintessential image most of us have: a cowboy pulling up to a bar in the middle of the Outback, kangaroos hopping about and koalas in the trees. He darts inside for a quick Foster’s, which is Australia for beer (or so we’re told).
